December 2022 Update No images? Click here The countdown is on!April 2023 will be a month to remember when the eyes of the world are on Western Australia and thousands of people head to parts of the Gascoyne and Pilbara regions for an exceptional Total Solar Eclipse experience. A ‘line of totality’ captures Exmouth and some islands off the Pilbara Coast – a rare opportunity to experience a total (100%) solar eclipse. Nearby towns, including Onslow and Carnarvon will host an almost total eclipse with Onslow experiencing 99% totality and Carnarvon 97%, making them great alternative viewing sites. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy the eclipse via a livestream. We look forward to bringing you full details on a whole range of different and exciting ways to experience and celebrate the eclipse over the next few months. Looking for a place to stay? Book early! The Total Solar Eclipse will attract visitors from around WA, across the country and from around the world to one of the most beautiful parts of our State. It is important that anyone planning to travel to the region has confirmed accommodation arrangements in place. Accommodation across the region especially in Carnarvon, Onslow and Coral Bay is limited. There is still accommodation available in Exmouth and we recommend you call providers directly to secure it. You can find the comprehensive list of providers here: Exmouth CCI Website. Also in Exmouth, self-contained camp sites are still available at the Welch St Campsite. Anyone booking these sites must meet the requirements of ‘fully self-contained’ including having their own toilet, shower, waste management, power and drinking water and stay for a minimum of four nights. Details about additional camp sites options at Welch Street will be released soon. Meanwhile, the Shire of Exmouth is asking locals to register their properties as temporary accommodation. Properties can be temporarily registered as a campsite, holiday house or holiday home. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DCBA) has some good advice for campers on its website and you can expect regular updates right through to April 2023. An experience unlike any other - be prepared!Regulars and first-time travellers heading to any of the holiday hot spots in the Gascoyne Region next April are encouraged to plan early and plan carefully. Local resources are being bolstered with the benefit of new infrastructure funding and other support but will still be stretched. One exciting development is that work has just begun on Telstra's new mobile base station at Exmouth South. This will provide new mobile coverage over the light industrial area and help reduce demand on the mobile base station in Exmouth. Visitors will need to bring loads of good cheer – along with enough gear to ensure they are as self-sufficient as possible. While part of the fun of holidays is to expect the unexpected, it’s important to plan to ease the burden on our hosts and make everyone’s Total Solar Eclipse experience more enjoyable. In the weeks ahead, there will be more information and handy checklists along with helpful information and tips. Big team effortAs most people are counting down to a festive season break, planning for an influx of up to 20,000 people or more to the best vantage points for the Total Solar Eclipse is gathering momentum. The towns of Exmouth, Carnarvon and Onslow are used to school holidaymakers enjoying their spectacular coastline and embracing all they have to offer, but next April will take that popularity to an unprecedented level. In preparation, the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) has taken on a central coordination role with teams from 14 different State agencies; each of the local shires and the Federal Department of Defence all working to ensure the region can service the influx and provide a once in a lifetime experience. The success of the Total Solar Eclipse experience will not only depend on this ‘army’ of workers – it will rely on every member of each local community and on every visitor to the region who will need to come well prepared to contribute to creating a great atmosphere.
