Right turning bay to improve safety on SH22 near Drury

We’re pleased to confirm that a new right-hand bay will be put in on State Highway 22 (SH22) to make it safer to turn into Jesmond Road.

Construction of the new turning bay will start this weekend, improving safety for residents, and should be completed by the end of the month.

The right turn bay work has been bought forward ahead of other short-term safety improvements on this stretch of highway, thanks to generous support from Karaka Pines Villages which is developing the nearby Karaka Lifestyle Estate retirement village.

The work will take place on Sunday to Thursday nights from 9pm to 5am, weather permitting.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience or noise. There will be stop/go traffic management and temporary speed limits in place.

The SH22 safety improvements are part of the wider Supporting Growth programme that is looking at ways to support this area as the largest future urban growth area in Auckland. The safety improvements will help make it safer for people who are travelling to work, school or to leisure activities, whether they are using public transport, driving, walking or cycling.

A range of short-term improvements are currently being considered for delivery through the Safe Network Programme (SNP).

Longer-term plans for SH22 are being developed by the Supporting Growth programme in an integrated way so the transport network is in place and ready to go as it becomes a more urban area. We are working alongside housing and infrastructure developers to ensure our programmes are aligned and our plans are being developed in collaboration with Auckland Council, which has been consulting on the draft structure plan for the wider area over the past month.
