Join the TA Pedagogical Training Hub!
The TA (Teaching Assistant) Pedagogical Training Hub is a portal in Brightspace for TAs to watch pre-recorded training videos, access resource materials and share resources related to teaching. If you are a TA and would like to enrol in the Hub, please email tasupport@cunet.carleton.ca.

Parking Options
Parking Services is opening the student parking pass waitlist through the permit section of ParkAdmin Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. Passes will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on availability. In addition to student parking passes, there are other parking options available. Limited all-day parking is available in P7 for $12/day or in other visitor lots at varying rates on a first-come, first-served basis. For those arriving later in the day, evening permits for P7 are available starting at 3:30 p.m. and can be purchased online through ParkAdmin. Alternatively, off-campus parking is available at Vincent Massey Park (Confederation Heights Lot #64) for $7.50/day on a first-come, first-served basis and is a five-minute walk from campus via the pedestrian bridge near Richcraft Hall. Please pay for parking as indicated on the posted signage.

Library Road Reduced to One Lane
Work has started on the air intake and exhaust shafts on the north side of the MacOdrum Library. As a result, Library Road will be reduced to one lane intermittently for the next three weeks, with flag persons on site to direct traffic. Facilities Management and Planning thanks you for your understanding.

Mini-Courses Program Instructor Proposal Application
The Mini-Courses Program (MCP) provides students from grades 8 to 11 a one-week enriched learning experience at Carleton. The Undergraduate Recruitment Office is looking for enthusiastic graduate students who are interested in teaching a course during the first week of May. Find more information and the application process on
the MCP website. Applications open Oct. 6 and close Nov. 15. 

Fall Career & Networking Fair
The
in-person Fall Career & Networking Fair is on Oct. 15! Explore opportunities, gain insights from employers and practice your networking skills – all without leaving campus.

Fall Break
Students have a fall break from Oct. 20 to Oct. 24. During this time, no classes will take place.

Pathy Foundation Fellowship: Applications Now Open

Applications for the next cohort of the Pathy Foundation Fellowship is open until Nov. 15.

This is a 12-month experiential-learning program in youth leadership and community engagement. Each year, up to 12 selected Fellows receive state-of-the-art training, extensive support, and $50,000 in funding to support their growth as leaders, make a meaningful impact in a community they care about, and acquire skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. 

This is the only program in Canada that provides young people with a fully funded opportunity to dedicate a year of their early career to an initiative they are passionate about, in any field, sector, and community across the world.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship
The annual doctoral scholarship has launched. This competition aims to highlight excellence in the humanities and social sciences and is intended for students who are in their first or second year of their doctoral studies at the time of application. The deadline to apply is Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. ET. It is important to note that candidates in their final year of a master's program are no longer eligible for the 2026 scholarship competition. For information regarding the scholarship competition,

Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship 2025-2026

The 2025-2026 Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship application for an outstanding international student from an African country is available. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2026.

Eligible recipients will be full-time students proceeding from one year to another in any program of study at Carleton University. Consideration will be given to students in financial need. Application is required. Endowed in 2005 by friends, family and colleagues in honour of Richard J. Van Loon, Carleton’s 10th President.

Department of National Defence Conference

The MINDS Team at the Department of National Defence invites students to the Women, Peace and Security Conference 2025: From Policy to Practice – 25 Years of WPS (#WPS25) from Oct. 28-29. The hybrid event will be held both at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa and online using Microsoft Teams.

Graduate Student Health & Dental Plan – What You Need to Know
All full-time graduate students at Carleton are automatically enrolled in the GreenShield Student Health & Dental Plan through the Graduate Students' Association (GSA). The plan provides comprehensive coverage to support your health and well-being during your studies. Check out the GSA Student Services page here for more detailed information about the plan.

Part-time students are not automatically covered, but may elect to join the plan. Part-time co-op students are subject to the same rules as part-time students. If your part-time co-op is in the Fall Term, you will need to opt-in to the health plan within the applicable opt-in period while you are eligible. Here is the opt in link!

The opt-in and opt out period is firmly set at Oct. 10. No exceptions can be made after this deadline.

Inaugural Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture

Camille Dundas, co-founder and editor-in-chief of ByBlacks.com will give a lecture on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. titled, From the Provincial Freeman to ByBlacks.com: Ending Extractive Journalism.

There will also be remarks from Adrienne Shadd, historian and descendant of Mary Ann Shadd Cary.

RE:DESIGN: Guest Lecture by Danah Abdulla

How can we study and teach design that is critical, socially engaged and relevant to place? In her book, Design Otherwise: Transforming Design Education in the Arab Region, Danah Abdulla challenges us to imagine design education and culture moving beyond blindly borrowing Eurocentric models and frameworks.

This event on Oct. 6 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Azrieli Pavilion features a presentation of key themes from the book, with an in-conversation part with Prof. Chiara Del Gaudio.

 

Join the Conversation: Indigenous Legal Orders at the Ojigìjowewin Legal Symposium

Register for the Ojigíjowewin Legal Symposium, which is being hosted from Oct. 21 to 23 on campus and the National Gallery of Canada.

This event will explore how Indigenous legal orders can address and resolve identity fraud while building pathways forward that strengthen Indigenous sovereignty, traditions and futures. Registration is required.

Master's Student Pablo Arzate in the Technology Innovation Management Program

Bombs Below: TIM Student-Led Startup Uses Drones to Map WWII Explosives

When Pablo Arzate launched a drone over Ottawa’s Mer Bleue Bog this summer, he was demonstrating how cutting-edge geophysics, proprietary hardware and AI-driven software can reveal what’s hidden beneath the surface.

Arzate is the founder of 3XMAG, a startup specializing in drone-mounted magnetometry and radiometry, technologies that detect subtle anomalies in the Earth’s magnetic field and natural radiation levels. Originally developed for mining, 3XMAG’s system is proving valuable for industries ranging from environmental monitoring to defence.

“What we’re doing is geophysics,” explains Arzate, a master’s student in Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program. “We’re measuring subsurface magnetic fields to identify metal objects that shouldn’t be there.”

And in Mer Bleue, a conservation area and former Royal Canadian Air Force bombing range, 3XMAG found plenty.
