Kia ora and welcome

Welcome to our first edition of the North Auckland state highway maintenance weekly roadworks update.

This newsletter covers maintenance and renewal roadworks along State Highway 16 (SH16) between north of Woodhill to Wellsford and State Highway 1 (SH1) between north of Warkworth to Wellsford.

We’re excited to be delivering the largest road rebuild programme ever undertaken in Te Tai Tokerau Northland and North Auckland between 2024 and 2027.  This work is really important to improve our roads and provide a safer and more enjoyable drive for everyone.

Our annual summer renewal programme runs from September to May, and you’ll likely have noticed our contractors busy on the state highway network over the last 6 months – doing the patch repairs, chip sealing, asphalt resurfacing, and rebuilding roads to ensure people can get to where they want to go, quickly and safely.

This seasons pavement and surfacing programme (Sep 2024 – May 2025) is over 78% complete, with approximately 154 lane km completed as of 17 March 2025. We're on track to complete 100% of the works (approx. 198 lane km) by the end of the season.

Drainage on state highways

Each month, we’ll spotlight a part of our maintenance and renewals programme – whether it’s a key worksite or corridor, a type of work we do, or the people and machinery behind it. This month, we’re featuring drainage – one of the most important but often overlooked aspects of road maintenance.

Proper drainage prevents water from pooling on the road surface, which can cause potholes, damage road foundations, and even lead to flooding. Water that doesn’t drain properly weakens the road over time, creating safety hazards and increasing the need for costly repairs.

Our cyclic maintenance team recently cleared drainage along SH16 just south of Glorit, removing mud and vegetation to keep water flowing freely. Alongside various road rebuild sites, we’ve also improved drainage systems to help remove any excess water and extend the lifespan of the new road surface. These upgrades will help prevent water overflow, protect roads, and reduce flood risks in low-lying areas.

If you’ve seen a state highway that has urgent issues impacting safety, for example significant water pooling, potholes or debris, please contact us at 0800 444 449. You can also report other state highway feedback or issues here: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/contact-us/email-us/state-highway-issue-or-feedback/. Keeping roads safe is a team effort, and we appreciate your help in identifying problem areas before they become bigger issues.
