SH16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku

Too many people are dying or being seriously injured along SH16 and we know safety treatments can help to save lives.

Safety Improvements
Work continues behind the scenes on the safety improvements. Because we want to start as soon as we can, we’ve split the project into two stages. Stage One runs from Huapai to Waimauku and Stage Two is between the Brigham Creek roundabout and Kumeu.

We’ve prioritised work between Huapai and Waimauku, where half of the crashes are head-on. Work will start on this section while we continue to confirm Stage Two, including progressing resource consents, design and property negotiations.

We know the community are wanting to see these improvements as soon as possible. We acknowledge that this is taking longer than we have anticipated and is frustrating for many people. We’d now like to update you on how the project is progressing.

Stage One - Huapai to Waimauku

  • Stage One is the priority and is progressing well. We are getting close to several key milestones.
  • We will shortly be lodging the required consents with Auckland Council.
  • We have now successfully talked to all affected landowners about how the project will impact their properties. We will be continuing conversations with landowners in the area about what to expect once construction starts.
  • We will continue working with landowners until we have the necessary property agreements in place, work with utility providers about relocating any services, and then apply for building consent.
  • Construction will take place following, consent approval and property acquisition.
  • Analysis of construction methods has taken place and, we will continue to work through how traffic will be managed to minimise disruption during construction.

Stage Two - Brigham Creek roundabout to Kumeu

  • Stage Two contains a larger number of significant design changes and resource consents and it also includes a new roundabout at the intersection of SH16 and Coatesville-Riverhead Highway.  It also has a greater number of landowner driveways, who we need to work closely with.
  • Work is continuing to confirm the timing for this section.
  • We know that the community are eager to see progress at the Coatesville Riverhead Intersection so we will look at what areas of this we can prioritise.
  • The team is now progressing on getting a specialist design team up and running to be able to focus on this section.

Safer speeds for your roads

Summary of community engagement

Last year we asked people what they thought about speed limits, the majority of people supported safer speeds in the area. Reviewing the speed limit is something we can do now, and we will now formally consult on this.

What we heard

We asked for your feedback on current speeds on this stretch of State Highway 16. People in your community have told us that the speed limits on SH16 between Brigham Creek and Waimauku feel too high to be safe.

Thank you to those who gave us their thoughts which we have summarised here.

What we're now proposing

We’ve looked at this feedback alongside our analysis of what is the safe and appropriate speed for this road. We are now coming back to the community to ask for feedback on these proposed speed limits:

SH16 Kumeu/Huapai

  • Reduce the speed through Kumeu and Huapai from the 60km/h to 50km/h from 50m south-east of Old Railway Road to 20m west of Station Road.
  • Retain a small section of the 60km/h speed limit from 20m west of Station Road to 200m north-west of Trigg Road.

SH16 Kumeu/Huapai to Waimauku

  • Reduce the speed between Haupai and Waimauku from the 100km/h to 80km/h from 200m north-west of Trigg Road to 140m east of Wintour Road.

SH16 Waimauku

  • Reduce the speed through Waimauku from the 70km/h to 60km/h from 140m east of Wintour Road to 380m west of Solan Drive.

You can provide feedback:

- online via nzta.govt.nz/auckland-speed-reviews
- or email to auckland.speed.reviews@nzta.govt.nz

Consultation closes on 26 November.
