Term 3 Week 9 September 2019
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Greetings to you all. Te wiki o te reo Māori took place last week and each class was challenged to make a conscious effort to bring te reo into their daily interactions with others and help to strengthen the language. The theme for this year’s Māori language week was Kia Kaha te reo Māori, make the language strong. To coincide with Māori language week the Ministry of Education brought out some beautiful dual-language readers. A few of our senior students will be turning some of these texts into on-line stories to help the younger members of our school community to engage with these books. Keep an eye on our school Facebook page over the coming weeks as I will be sharing
them. Swimming Next term we will begin our annual swimming programme at Wharenui pool which consists of 9 swimming lessons. Living in such close proximity to the sea, rivers and lakes makes learning basic water safety skills vital. I wish to extend a huge thank you to the New Zealand Community Trust who are providing financial assistance for this swimming programme. We appreciate their support which will make this swimming programme very reasonable. Wearable Arts The excitement is building about the Wearable Arts Learning Celebration this Thursday. The children have made a wonderful job of their creations and are looking forward to sharing
them with you. Children need to meet in their classrooms at 5.40pm so that they get ready in their costumes. They will need to come to school dressed in mufti. Once you have dropped your child at their room, please head to the Parish Centre to take your seat ready for the celebration which will start at 6 pm. Tuaki Next term we welcome back Mrs Sauni who will be returning to Tuaki part-time for the remainder of the year. She will be working Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Duncan will continue to work in Tuaki on Thursday and Fridays. Ngā mihi Stephanie

PTA UpdateKia ora whanau, Disco Thanks so much to everyone that made the school disco so successful. Our aim was for a fun social time for the kids, not to raise a profit and happily we did better than break even which is great. We spent a bit more than usual on the DJ but we were happy with our investment as she was interactive and the kids had a great time. If you have any feedback on the Disco or ideas for improvement we’d love to hear from you, just send us an email. Keep the bling for next
year!! House of Bricks Friday 18th October $5 per CHILD We have decided not to charge for adults, just $5 a child. Please promote this event to your friends, family, neighbours, workmates etc. There is

Tea Towels Next
term we will sell Christmas themed tea towels. There will be two to choose from, Matau students and Tangaroa students. $15 for one, $24 for two or $10 each for 3 or more. These will make great Christmas gifts and a lovely memento for the children to keep. Term 1 next year We hope to begin the year with the Family Day at Halswell again and we will be selling bulbs as a fundraiser. 2020 Fair Next year the big fundraising event is the Twilight Christmas Fair, which we are hoping to hold on Friday 20th November .
To run the fair we need a fair committee of about 10 committed people. If you would be interested in running the fair next year, keep your eye out in this part of the newsletter or drop us a line. We aren’t sure how we are going to work the PTA and the fair committee. In the past the PTA have run it with the help of a fair committee and we have also had a separate fair committee who ran it independently of the PTA. It will depend on numbers of people who put their hand up to help. If you can help in any way we need you!
