Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

This Weeks Summary

 
 

There will be no planned construction closures in place over Matariki weekend. Road closures will pause from 12pm on Thursday 19 June and works will resume on Monday 23 June as scheduled.

Daytime construction closures remain in place at the following locations, please refer to each zone's section for futher information. 

French Pass:

  • Croisilles-French Pass Road, prior to Elaine Bay

Kenepuru: 

  • Akerbloms Road, Punga Cove 
  • Island Point, from Onahau Road to Tara Bay
  • Portage Heights, from Portage Resort

Tennyson Inlet:

  • Tennyson Inlet Road, prior to the Opouri Saddle

Three new road closures are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks on Queen Charlotte Drive, Port Underwood Road and Te Hoiere Road. Please refer to the new road closure section below for more information.

There are multiple sites under construction on Croisilles Road and Croisilles-French Pass Road at Goat Hill and either side of Okiwi Bay. Please plan ahead for multiple delays of up to 15 minutes at each site.

On Queen Charlotte Drive there are multiple construction sites between Momorangi Bay and Whenuanui (Becks) Bay. Please plan ahead for delays.

New road closures

 
 

There will be no planned construction closures in place over Matariki weekend. Road closures will pause from 12pm on Thursday 19 June and works will resume on Monday 23 June as scheduled.

Queen Charlotte Drive

Queen Charlotte Drive above Whenuanui (Becks) Bay will be closed to all traffic, from Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July from 8am to 5pm with openings on the hour, every hour to allow the line of traffic to clear.

Port Underwood Road

Port Underwood Road on the Waikawa side of Whatamango Bay will be closed to all traffic from Monday 23 June until mid-August between the hours of 8am and 12pm and 1pm to 4pm.

Te Hoiere Road - Pelorus

Daytime construction closures are planned on Te Hoiere Road, Pelorus from Monday 16 June until early July. The closures will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

French Pass

 
 

Construction is nearing completion on Croisilles-French Pass Road, 1.5km before the Elaine Bay Road intersection. The road retreat has been completed and the site is awaiting final sealing and minor finishing works. Road closures, in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4.30pm at this site will end tomorrow Friday 13 June. A further one-day closure will be needed for sealing at this site (weather dependent) and will be notified via the newsletter and Antenno once sealing is scheduled.

The road retreat on Croisilles Road near Goat Hill, prior to Okiwi Bay is now complete. Pavement preparations will be undertaken prior to sealing, once weather conditions allow. Delays of up to 15 minutes are expected at this site when construction is in place. 

Work to fill a gully site at the start of Croisillies-French Pass Road, just outside Okiwi Bay is ongoing.

Work for a road retreat on Croisillies Road approximately 2km before Okiwi Bay, has begun with the material being carted to the gully fill site (mentioned above). Expect a higher volume of truck movements between these sites.

Both of the above sites will be under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 10 minutes.

Minor works are underway on Bulwer, Te Towaka-Port Ligar and Croisilles-French Pass Road under stop/go traffic management.

Kenepuru Road

 
 

Daytime construction closures are in place on Kenepuru Road at Portage Heights and Island Point.

The road closure at Portage Heights is located from Portage Resort for approximately 1km towards the Heads. This week the crew began anchor installation for the first retaining wall at this site. Closures are in place at the following times: 

  • Monday to Thursday 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Friday 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm

The Island Point road closure is located from Onahau Road to Tara Bay. Construction of the second retaining wall is underway with rail iron installation. Closures are in place at the following times: 

  • Monday 10am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Tuesday to Thursday 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Friday 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm

Outside of the closures, works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management with up to 15 minute delays.

Road users wanting to travel through both road closures at Island Point and Portage Heights during the lunch time opening will need to be at their nearest closure point between 12pm and 12.30pm. Recovery crews will ensure vehicles can pass through all sites without getting stuck between the closure points.

Works will be undertaken just beyond the Onahau Road intersection on Kenepuru Road on Friday 13 and Monday 16 June under stop/go traffic management. Please expect delays of up to 5 minutes.

Stormwater improvements are nearing completion on Akerbloms Road, Punga Cove. Overland drainage has been laid and kerb preparation completed. During these works Akerbloms Road carpark, before Punga Cove Resort, is closed to all traffic. 

Minor works and culvert installation continues past Kenepuru Heads, under stop/go traffic management. Please expect minor delays.

From Monday 23 June until late-August, multiple culvert installations will be undertaken on Titirangi Road under resident access only. Residents should expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Temporary traffic lights remain in place at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). Both sites have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Northbank

 
 

Last week rock removal was carried out on Northbank Road at two locations.The crew have removed loose rocks and debris from the cliff face and cleared boulders from the roadside.

At the site 2km from the start of the road, the road has now been reinstated to two lanes.

Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

Work continued on multiple sites this week on Queen Charlotte Drive between Momorangi and Shakespeare Bay.

Drainage work continues at the road retreat site above Governors Bay. Concrete dish and channel works are underway in the south bound lane. Pavement sealing at this site is to be completed when weather allows. 24/7 stop/go traffic management is in place at this site.

Drainage improvements are underway above Whenuanui (Becks) Bay where the crew continue to form and pour a concrete dish channel. 

A new retaining wall is under construction after Whenuanui (Becks) Bay when travelling from Picton. Works at this site are expected to continue over the coming weeks. 

Please plan ahead for delays of up to 15 minutes at each of these sites. 

Construction and drainage improvements on Pukenui Road are now complete and the road is open to all traffic.

Tennyson Inlet

 
 

Construction continues on Tennyson Inlet Road, approximately 1.5km before the Opouri Saddle for the construction of two retaining walls. Due to weather delays, the crew continue to work on backfilling the first wall. Once complete, anchor and waler installation will begin.

These works are being completed under daytime construction closures from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm Monday to Friday.  Due to weather delays and an increased scope of works these closures are now expected to finish mid-July.

Kenepuru Road restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road is open to the public, with overweight and overlength vehicle restrictions in place. 

Reduced speed limit signage and temporary traffic lights are in place at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). Both sites have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and side roads.

To apply for a permit for an over dimension vehicle to travel on Kenepuru Road, email recovery@marlboroughroads.com or call 0800 213 213. 

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Other recovery roads

Please be aware that on all roads, works may be in progress and/or traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads being closed at short notice. Regardless of the status of the road, please drive to the conditions.
