Summary of Feedback- Coatesville/Riverhead Highway right turn ban

We've heard previously from the community that a solution is needed now to improve safety at the Coatesville/Riverhead Highway and State Highway 16 (SH16) intersection.

While we're working on the design for the permanent improvements, we propose to temporarily ban right turns out of Coatesville/Riverhead Highway onto SH16.

Between 28 April and 14 May 2021, we asked you whether there was anything else we should consider as part of the interim safety improvements.

We had a great response to our request for feedback with over 508 submissions received. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

We have read and analysed all of your feedback and have summarised the key points raised. Click here to see a summary of the feedback received.

We have also updated the frequently asked questions on our website to respond to some of your concerns and questions.

Progress update on the wider project

The purpose of this project is to improve safety and efficiency along SH16. The project is split into two stages.

Stage 1- Huapai to Waimauku:

The notice of requirement for Stage 1 is currently under appeal. The Environment Court process is progressing and a hearing date has been set for this month. This section of the project is on hold until the appeal is resolved.

Stage 2- Brigham Creek to Kumeū:

Site investigations on private properties have been underway over the last few months and are almost complete. Work has begun on the detailed design of this section and we plan to speak with landowners and the wider community later this year.

The key improvements included in the current design are:

  • A roundabout at the intersection of Coatesville/Riverhead Highway and SH16
  • Four-laning between Brigham Creek and Taupaki roundabout
  • A shared walking and cycling path on the southern side of SH16
  • Flexible median safety barriers from Brigham Creek to Taupaki
  • Taupaki to Kumeū flush median

We know that these improvements are important to the community and we are progressing with this as quickly as we can. We acknowledge that the level of uncertainty has been frustrating but we’re taking the time to make sure the design is fit for purpose.

Transport in the Northwest

We also received a lot of questions about other transport projects happening in the Northwest.

Auckland Transport have completed final designs for the Station/Access road improvements with enabling works scheduled to begin soon. More information can be found here.

Auckland Transport are also proposing safety improvements at the intersection of Coatesville/Riverhead Highway and Old Railway Rd including a new right-turn bay. More information can be found here. Feedback on this proposal has closed and an update will be posted on this website soon.

Te Tupu Ngātahi (the Supporting Growth Alliance) are working on long term strategic plans to address future growth in the area. They are currently completing a detailed business case that includes options for an Alternative State Highway. The Alternative State Highway and all Supporting Growth Northwest projects are yet to be prioritised for construction funding. More information can be found on their website here.

Read below to see how all these projects fit together along with indicative timeframes.
