Progress update on the wider project
The purpose of this project is to improve safety and efficiency along SH16. The project is split into two stages.
Stage 1- Huapai to Waimauku:
The notice of requirement for Stage 1 is currently under appeal. The Environment Court process is progressing and a hearing date has been set for this month. This section of the project is on hold until the appeal is resolved.
Stage 2- Brigham Creek to Kumeū:
Site investigations on private properties have been underway over the last few months and are almost complete. Work has begun on the detailed design of this section and we plan to speak with landowners and the wider community later this year.
The key improvements included in the current design are:
-
A roundabout at the intersection of Coatesville/Riverhead Highway and SH16
-
Four-laning between Brigham Creek and Taupaki roundabout
-
A shared walking and cycling path on the southern side of SH16
-
Flexible median safety barriers from Brigham Creek to Taupaki
-
Taupaki to Kumeū flush median
We know that these improvements are important to the community and we are progressing with this as quickly as we can. We acknowledge that the level of uncertainty has been frustrating but we’re taking the time to make sure the design is fit for purpose.
