Kia ora,

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that State Highway 2 (SH2) over the Remutaka Hill will be closed for essential maintenance and resurfacing for five nights between 9pm to 4am, starting Sunday night 26 February and finishing Friday morning 3 March.

Due to the extent of the resurfacing works taking place during these closures there will only be two escorted crossings available per night for special circumstances and motorists are advised to plan ahead. The times are:

  • Featherston to Hutt 10.30pm
  • Hutt to Featherston 11.30pm

Unplanned crossings are unsafe to manage for both workers and road users. Any travellers with special circumstances should contact customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz. We regret that travellers turning up without a booking will be turned away.

  • We will remain in contact with Emergency Services to ensure we can provide safe passage of ‘flashing light’ vehicles.
  • Trucks will not be able to cross during the closures.
  • More information about the closures can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka

We understand the closure may inconvenience some road users and thank you for your patience and understanding as crews carry out this essential work.

These regular night closures significantly reduce the number of disruptions at other times for road users. Road crews can complete a large amount of work safely during these closures because multiple crews can work across the hill simultaneously without disrupting traffic.

Regular users of this route are encouraged to stay up to date on upcoming closures. While these dates are fixed, bad weather may cause work to be cancelled.

Looking ahead – Daytime closures for feral goat control

Plan ahead for four DAYTIME CLOSURES of one hour for feral goat control operations on Monday 13, Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 March, 9:30am to 10:30am each day, weather permitting.

A full list of planned maintenance closures can be found on our website: www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka
