Kia ora,

Welcome to the latest update from the State Highway 58 Safety Improvements team.

We’re currently busy making safety improvements between Harris Road and east of Moonshine Road. While this is underway, we’re also working through some questions around the consent applications we have lodged for changes proposed for the last stage of the project between Moonshine Road and Transmission Gully interchange.

Construction work

The road between Moonshine and Harris Roads is steep and generates significant water run-off.

To help capture and clean this water flow, we’ve been making improvements to roadside drainage alongside SH58 in advance of road widening and strengthening.

Keeping everyone safe

Making sure everyone makes it home to their loved ones is the reason why we’re making the safety improvements along SH58. While construction is happening, we ask people driving through the site to travel at or below the signed speed limit. These lower speeds protects both road users and construction workers and may be either 30km/hr or 50 km/hr.

Passers-by might have spotted Police out and about who monitored speeds through the site a few weeks ago.

While doing this work over a one hour period, 10 people were stopped and ticketed for exceeding the signposted 30km/hr limit.

We’d like to acknowledge the vast majority of people who drive to the variable speed limits in the area and are doing their part to keep everyone safe - thank you!

Consents for east of Moonshine Road to Transmission Gully Interchange

We’ve now received approvals from Greater Wellington Regional Council to complete safety improvement works in this section of SH58. We’re continuing to work with Porirua City Council to answer some questions it has about the proposed works, and their potential impacts.

Proposed works include:

• Two new roundabouts at Moonshine Road, and Flightys/Murphys Roads
• Shared paths around the roundabouts
• Widening of the road, adding wider sealed shoulders and side barriers
• Installing median barriers for the entire length of the road
• Improved drainage to collect and treat water run-off from the road.
