STEM Education for the Future - 2020 Visioning Report

National Science Foundation

The report explored current examples of innovation in STEM Education, gathered information from individual experts and students, and looked for inspiration from NSF’s 10 Big Ideas for Future Investment and the NSB’s Vision 2030. From this work, the report identified three priorities for a STEM Education of the Future that will ensure learners understand and are prepared for 21st-century STEM knowledge and STEM careers.

Leveraging Digitalisation for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa

Syed T. Ahmed, Kelly Hayden, Makopoi Nkopane, & Yosra
Kalleli.

This report provides an overview of the progress of five African member
States that are more advanced in digitalization - Mauritius, Nigeria, Seychelles, Tunisia and South Africa. The report will present examples of how ICT can drive development and create opportunities, particularly for women. It will also provide a general overview of the status of each country for digitalization and how ready the population is to embrace it.

Preparing Young People for Careers Through Exposure, Exploration, and Experience: A Framework for Career Education

Bruno V. Manno

The paper indicates that students are largely ignorant about preparing for their careers. A formal career education program for young people ought to be integrated into K–12 schooling. It should help them develop career ambitions by learning about many different careers.

Spark & Sustain: How all of the world’s school systems can improve learning at scale

McKinsey’s Global Education Practice.

The report discusses patterns related to the “why” and the “how” of successful and sustained educational reform that policymakers can adapt to their specific context. The why and the how are often overlooked in conventional policy analysis, but they are crucially important.

Curriculum in FE Colleges over time: Illustrations of change and continuity

Prue Huddleston & Lorna Unwin

The report looked within the college walls (past and present) to find illustrations of how the FE curriculum has been presented and organised at different periods. By selecting examples from archive material such as copies of prospectuses and syllabuses, papers of academic boards and student unions, and articles in local newspapers, we hope to shed some light on the shifts in curricular activity and, hence, contribute to the wider debate about the role of FE today.

The new video is a global version, based on the original ‘Redraw the Balance’ UK version, which the Education and Employers charity published to mark International Women’s Day in 2016. Kindly made by Mullen Lowe, it showed 66 children aged five to seven drawing a picture of a firefighter, a surgeon, and a fighter pilot. 61 children drew these roles as men, only five drew women…

We believe no child should be constrained by stereotypes or the expectations of others. We know that if young people hear firsthand about the world of work, they work harder, get better grades and are more likely to break down barriers.

They should have the chance to start as early as possible, and that is why we launched the national I am #InspiringTheFuture campaign.
