August and Ice CreamAugust is for squeezing out the last bit of summer. Of course we think it is for trips to the barn for a cone and catching up with an old friend or maybe a milkshake with the kids to take the sting out of back to school shopping. August is also a time to stop by the county fair and eat fair food, go on a few rides and see what your local farmers, 4-Hers and FFA youth have been up to all year. My boys are too young to be in 4-H or enter animals in the fair, but we have been over to visit my nephews, who will be there with their projects. Otto enjoys helping walk their market lambs. If you visit the Dutchess County Fair between August 22nd-27th, make sure you take some time to visit Livestock Hill. You can also meet some of the farmers and cows from Hudson Valley Fresh in buildings 29 & 30. See the cows that make our delicious ice cream and talk to the farmers that take care of them 24/7. You can also walk in any building/barn on the hill and meet a local 4-Her and ask them about their project, be it a goat, cow, rabbit, or even a handmade project. These are the kids up early and up late, not on tiktok, but out in a barn tending to their animals and getting them ready for show. If you enjoy locally grown meat and want to support these 4-Hers and FFA students you can attend the Dutchess County Youth Livestock Sale on Saturday August 26th at 4pm, but if you are unfamiliar with auctions or buying at a sale, come at 3 to meet the kids and learn about what you can purchase and how it works. My husband & I are currently enjoying the bacon on our BLT's from the pig we purchased last year. August Shake of the MonthMojito!A delicious mixture of lime and mint blended together for a refreshing shake of the month topped with whipped cream and a mint sprig from our own staffs garden.
