SH1 Waimakariri Bridge approach and deck work

Asphalting the new Waimakariri Bridge decks and work on the bridge approaches has been reprogrammed due to resource availability.

We will now be digging out the approaches for the new bridge lanes north of the Waimakariri Bridge from Sunday 16 February till early March. To do this work the right-hand lanes northbound and southbound will be closed every night (Sunday to Thursday) from 7pm till 5.30am. This means only one lane will be available in each direction during this work. A 60km/h speed limit will be in place at night. Please expect delays due to lane closures in both directions.

In late February, we will be asphalting the new bridge decks. There will be no traffic impact during this work: two traffic lanes, north and southbound will be maintained.

More info on this work and our future programme here.

Traffic moving onto Cranford Street Roundabout

Traffic on Cranford Street will shift onto the new roundabout lanes, southbound traffic on Monday night 17 February and northbound on Sunday night 23 February.

We will then remove the existing road and construct a shared pedestrian and cycle path.

Cyclists can merge with the traffic choosing to take the roundabout lanes or preferably use the shared use path on the northbound side of the road.

There will be a temporary 30km/h speed limit in place.

QEII Drive shared cycle path closure and detour

From Monday 17 February until late April, we need to close the QEII Drive shared path between Philpotts Road and Innes Road roundabout so we can build the new shared path. A diversion will see cyclists and pedestrians using Innes Road or Hills Road, E Ellington Drive and the Buller’s Stream Walkway. This route will add about 500m to most journeys and is a far safer option than a temporary path along QEII Drive. The Hills Road subway will stay open as normal and we will provide extra street lighting along Buller’s Stream Walkway.

A map of the diversion is below and on our website flyer.

Reminder QEII closed Tuesday & Wednesday night

Tonight and tomorrow night we are closing QEII Drive between Main North Road and the Innes Road roundabout to pour concrete for the new QEII Drive Overbridge. The work starts at 9pm and will be finished by 6am the next morning.

Traffic will be diverted at Main North Road and the Innes Road roundabout. People on Hills Road will still be able to turn left out onto QEII Drive. Cyclists and pedestrians using the QEII Drive shared path will not be affected by the road closure.

We are also using this opportunity to get other bits of work done on QEII Drive while the road is closed. So, people living on or near QEII Drive may hear us working in several locations along the closed section of QEII Drive.

Wet weather may extend this work by one or two days.

Here is the newsletter we sent out on 28 January

Innes Road roundabout night work to continue

Night work at the QEII/Innes roundabout will continue for 3-4 more weeks to allow the kerb and channel to be laid. For safety and to reduce traffic congestion, this work needs to be done at night. We will not be working every night over this time and never on Friday or Saturday nights.

On the nights we are working there will be no right turn possible from QEII Drive to Innes Road. Traffic will be detoured via Marshland Road, Briggs Road and Hills Road.

Info about this work was explained in our January update here.
