HELP KEEP CASEY CLEAN AND GREEN

Green Living in Casey November

It’s time to clean up, Australia!

Registrations for Clean Up Australia Day - the country’s largest community-based environmental event - are now open for 2025. Clean Up Australia Day inspires communities to conserve the environment and help keep open spaces litter-free.

Anyone who would like to help remove rubbish from Casey's many waterways, parks and community spaces can choose to join a registered Clean Up event happening across Casey or register your own local site and become a site supervisor.

Registered sites receive clean-up kits from Clean Up Australia to help ensure the health and safety of volunteers and the community. Additionally, we are offering a $50 rebate per site for refreshments on the day and will have Litter Prevention Officers visiting sites across Casey to encourage and assist volunteers.

We are also providing rubbish pick-up services following the event where required.

ALSO - do you know where in Casey our picture (above) was taken? Share your thoughts at the Green Living in Casey Facebook group with the tag #GreenLivingCasey - and hang around for even more tips, activities and ideas.

Last chance to detox

With the incredibly popular Detox Your Home scheme winding up, we'd urge you to take the opportunity to get in while you can!

Community Cool Walks

Want to make a measurable difference in cooling Casey? Sweltering Cities is a national health charity. They work directly with communities to advocate and campaign for cooler homes, suburbs and cities.

With the City of Casey's support, Sweltering Cities is hosting two Community Cool Walks this February. The first will be in Narre Warren on Sunday, 23 and the next day in Cranbourne - Monday 24 February.

These Cool Walks aim to unite the community. We want to map hot and cool spots, share ideas for cooler suburbs, and discuss how to improve mobility on hot days.

You are welcome to come to one, or both of the Cool Walks.

Everyone is welcome to stick around after the walk for a free lunch at a nearby cafe!

Here’s how the Cool Walks will run: We’ll take a slow, relaxed 45-minute walk through the streets, (just under 1.5km) with frequent stops.

Everyone from neighbouring suburbs is welcome to come along, and we'd love to see you there.

Catch a carp

The Sustainability, Waste Education and Dads Matter teams braved the Catch a Carp event for World Wetlands Day on Sunday 2 February.

Despite the scorching weather, we were there to promote responsible fishing alongside FishCare Victoria.

Although the Carp evaded the tasty morsels on offer, everyone  was grateful for the shade, breeze and ice cream and gelati van!

The event raised awareness of their impact as a pest species that harms native fish and degrades waterways.

It also highlighted the importance of properly disposing of tangled and discarded fishing line to protect wildlife. Despite the heat, it was a great day to support cleaner, safer waterways for both people and nature.

Community Callout: Help Us Prepare for Extreme Weather Events!

We are looking for community members from across Casey to join a collaborative effort to prepare for extreme weather events like heatwaves, bushfires, storms, and floods.

We’re particularly interested in gathering ideas and insights for Hampton Park, Blind Bight, and Warneet. As our climate changes, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and we want to ensure these communities are ready.

What to plant

Tomato, pumpkin and other fruiting vines are on the wane, which means it might just be brassica time!

Search out some of the more flamboyant types to make your planting beds pop. Look out for kohlrabi, watercress,  horseradish, mustard or even purple Brussels sprouts.

Use it up recipe - Summer gratin

Zucchinis - or courgettes if you're fancy - are a most generous crop.

So if your friends and neighbours start running when you approach them with yet another bountiful basket of these treasures, it might be time to pair them with some other summery flavours and bake them instead.
