Quad Access Reduced Starting May 1
Facilities Management and Planning would like to advise the campus community that as of May 1, 2023, access to the academic quad will be reduced due to two projects. Replacing the roofs of the Tory Building and the Azrieli Theatre and Pavilion begins the week of May 1 and continues until early July. To ensure the area is safe, the stairs between the Azrieli Theatre and Pavilion will be closed until the completion of the roof work. In addition, ongoing work between Paterson Hall and Southam Hall requires the pathway located at the quad that runs to Southam Hall to be closed from May 1 until mid-June. Access to Southam Hall, and the parking garage will not be impacted. Access to the quad during these projects will be available from the south-side stairs (beside Tory) and the stairs beside Dunton Tower, as well as through the tunnels.

Biology PhD Student Receives Globalink Research Award to Study Conservation Science in AustraliaWhen her supervisor connected her with some former colleagues in Brisbane, Australia, Allison Binley jumped at the chance to conduct additional research abroad and expand the scope of her original thesis. Allison is a Carleton PhD candidate in the Department of Biology whose work focuses on conservation science. To finance her international activities, she applied for the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA), a funding program that supports research collaborations between Canada and select partner organizations and/or eligible countries. She was successful, and in September 2022, after 20+ hours and two layovers, she landed in
Brisbane. Thirteen Carleton students have been approved for or awarded the GRA in the 2022/23 fiscal year.

Carleton Researchers Recognized by New Frontiers Research Fund for Work in High-Risk, High-Reward ResearchFive Carleton University researchers received a combined $1.74 million from the federal government’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) today to support multidisciplinary projects in the fields of equitable housing design, machine learning, sustainable energy, and
surveillance. “Carleton has a long history of supporting collaboration and sharing expertise across disciplines,” said Rafik Goubran, Vice-President (Research and International). “These projects have the potential to greatly impact the lives of Canadians and represent several multidisciplinary areas of research strength in which Carleton excels.” The funding was awarded through two streams: Exploration and Post-Pandemic Recovery. The post-pandemic recovery
stream is a new category for this year. It aims to mobilize research efforts in support of a more equitable, sustainable and resilient post-pandemic reality.
