Kia ora

We know there is a lot going on in Ashhurst at the moment. Thanks again for your patience and support.

Our crews are finishing up in some areas, like Salisbury Street, Stanford Street and the village centre and moving onto others, like the Mulgrave Street and Hillary Crescent intersection and Hillary Crescent, Cambridge Avenue and Custom Street intersection.

Just a reminder to drive with extra care around our hardworking contractors.

Ngā mihi,

The project team

Who gives way?

People travelling down Bamfield, Lincoln and Worcester Streets will need to give way to traffic travelling on Stanford Street from now on.

Work on new road marking, signage and traffic islands to change the give way priority was completed in late August.

We made these changes after hearing from Ashhurst residents who told us people were using some streets to rat-run.

Changing the give way priority will help reduce the amount of out of town traffic using Bamfield, Lincoln and Worcester Streets, and help slow the speeds of vehicles that do, improving safety and amenity for residents.

Please pay extra attention while everyone gets used to these changes.

Finishing up in the village centre

We’re on track to finish the village centre by late-September, weather permitting.

Most of the road marking, including the school pedestrian crossing is now done and the Higgins crews are focused on completing the new raised intersection near the Ashhurst Library.

This work includes the associated concreting and road marking.

You’ll notice Palmerston North City Council staff have been through and planted the new landscaping boxes, which are looking great.

Lane closures, stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place at times while we carry out this work.

The changes we are making in the village centre will encourage drivers to slow down as they travel along Cambridge Avenue.

The new slow speed environment will make it safer for people to cross the road and encourage drivers to stop for a break and enjoy the village centre.

You can view the overall plans here.

'Southern' Ashhurst

Ashhurst residents have told us that they are worried about the speed of traffic through parts of Ashhurst South and that the current road layouts do not reflect the new traffic routes.

After sharing our designs at open days and speaking with residents and key stakeholders, we are making changes to improve this.

Mulgrave Street and Hillary Crescent intersection: We are realigning this intersection to give Mulgrave Street traffic the priority. This change will mean most of the traffic travelling through will not have to slow down and stop. We are also going to improve the footpath connections around both Hillary Crescent and Spelman Court to make it easier for pedestrians to get around.

Hillary Crescent, Cambridge Avenue and Custom Street intersection: We are upgrading this intersection to slow vehicles down as they enter Hillary Crescent from Cambridge Avenue, improve the footpath connections and improve visibility for those exiting Custom Street

Works will be carried out between 7.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and on some Saturdays.

Access to these roads will be maintained, however there may be stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions in place at times.

There will be some construction noise during works however we will endeavor to minimise this as much as possible.

Weather permitting, we will be finished in October 2020.

Work on the York Street and Cambridge Avenue intersection will start in October.

York Street and Cambridge Avenue intersection

A section of York Street will be closed to through traffic (access to businesses and for residents only) from late September while our crews prepare to start work on the new York Street and Cambridge Avenue intersection configuration.

In October we will start making changes to reduce traffic and lower speeds on York Street to improve safety for residents and businesses.

This will involve stopping drivers from exiting York Street onto Cambridge Avenue and introducing a give way on York Street, giving priority to Short Street.
We also propose to make some minor changes to SH3 and the SH3/ Cambridge Ave intersection to improve safety and driver behavior.
The left turn lane into Cambridge Ave will be removed to slow traffic heading toward the river, as well as reducing the road width by installing islands in the road shoulder and improving signs.
You can view the design above and our other designs on our project webpage or at the Ashhurst Library.

Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway

Construction of Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway is on track to get underway in January 2021.
Keep an eye out on their website for information about jobs and training events, you may be able to get involved in one of New Zealand's most important and exciting projects!

From labourers to carpenters, and supervisory roles to machine operators, the new highway will create a range of great work and training opportunities.

Speaking of the new highway, over the coming weeks, users of SH3 Napier Road in the Ashhurst area will see truck and trailer units transporting material for use in the construction of the Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway project site office.

These movements will range from two to five per hour and will travel to site from the Napier Road intersection with Raukawa Road.

There will also be a number of wide load deliveries coming to site.

These large transportation trucks will bring in construction machinery, storage containers, and the premade office units.

Please be patient and look for directions from the accompanying pilot vehicles about when it is safe to pass. These large deliveries will be infrequent but will continue steadily for the next few months.
