Local History: Shooting through

Shooting through on a Bondi tram was a formative experience for many Sydneysiders, and the people's choice for access to Bondi Beach. The first steam tram ran to Bondi Beach in 1894, part of a loop that ran down to Bondi Aquarium at Tamarama and then connected with the south end of Bondi Beach. The whole tram system was eventually electrified, and the steam trams retired by 1910. The last tram from Bondi Beach ran February 18, 1960. Packed full of riders, the tram left Bondi Beach at 3.30am and by the time it arrived at the Dowling Street depot it was missing most light fittings, the handrails, cushions, destination rolls and the lifting jack. You can read more about the Bondi tram here. Sydney Nostalgia, Bondi tram, ca 1940s. Photographed by Max Dupain, courtesy SLNSW.
