We've got some great updates for New Plymouth, so keep reading to find out more

Kia ora,

Welcome to our first New Plymouth Community Update. Thank you for subscribing; we are excited about sharing the latest updates in your neighbourhood.

The name Hononga Hapori was recently given to us. Hononga means ‘connection’ or ‘relationship’ and Hapori refers to ‘community’. Together, it highlights the connection between community and housing well-being and the relationship between a thriving community and the availability of healthy homes.

At Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities, we not only provide warm, dry homes but also support communities and build neighbourhoods. We want to work alongside communities to help build thriving, sustainable and inclusive communities.

We have some stories to share about our construction milestones and the work we are doing to support our customers, connect with our communities and partner with others.

Read on to find out more and please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or feedback.

What is happening in your neighbourhood?

We’re excited to plan and deliver new houses in New Plymouth, so more individuals and families will have a warm, dry, and safe place to call home.

We understand that you would like to keep updated about what is happening in your neighbourhood. As our housing projects and opportunities are at different stages, we have created an interactive map to ensure you always have access to the most up-to-date information.

A few highlights:

  • We’re pleased that construction has started at 62-68 Wrantage Street and 17-19 Holford Street in Westown. The 15 new homes, built by our local contractor Devon Homes, are a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes and will be used for public housing.
  • The 44 new home development at 66 – 70 Leach Street is well underway, with completion estimated mid 2024.

Leach Street Community drop-in Session

Last month, we organised a drop-in session for the Leach Street community. It was an opportunity for the community and stakeholders to come along and have a cuppa with the local Kāinga Ora team and to ask questions.

We were pleased that the majority support this development and recognise the need for warm, dry homes in New Plymouth.

We received some questions about who will live in the homes and how the homes will be managed. There was also significant interest in the community space that will be part of the development. The space will be open to Kāinga Ora customers and the wider community and will be a place where people can come together to learn, grow and be active together.

The 44 new homes and community space are estimated to be completed in mid 2024.

Opportunities to provide feedback and meet with us

Earlier this year, we invited you to discuss the new homes proposed for New Plymouth. Thank you to those who attended our drop-in sessions and shared your feedback with us.

We received some great feedback around how we can better support communities to be vibrant, sustainable and inclusive. Based on the thoughts and ideas people have already shared with us, we have identified opportunities for community gardens, beautification projects and events where communities can connect.

If you haven’t yet provided your feedback but would like to connect with us, you can join one of our upcoming drop-in sessions:

  • Community Outreach Session 1 - Thursday 5 October 10.00am – 11.00am, Puke Ariki Library Foyer
  • Community Outreach Session 2 - Tuesday 17 October 2.00pm – 3.00pm, Puke Ariki Library Foyer.
