Click here Why talk of 'peak veganism' is unhelpful From the Executive Director's desk On 7 August 2023 when the CEO of the leading US plant-based meat manufacturer Beyond Meat, Ethan Brown, told investors that net revenues had decreased 31% over the previous year, the media rushed to pronounce that we’d reached “peak veganism” and gathered further evidence of reduced sales, companies filing for bankruptcy, and consumers turning away from vegan products. But we should be cautious of judging the current state and potential of a whole sector on association with a lifestyle or ideology such as veganism. Research spotlight Global climate change mitigation roadmap proposed A major analysis has found that a global shift towards a plant-based diet and a reduction of industrialised animal agriculture could offset total greenhouse gas emissions by up to 68%. The systematic literature review of 303 studies has proposed a global roadmap of mitigation strategies to address climate change, including: divestment away from industrialised animal agriculture, a shift towards a more plant-based diet, increased availabilities of plant-based alternatives and public information campaigns, and global standardisation of ESG measures. Major plant-based merger All G Foods has announced its plant-based meat brand, Love BUDS, will merge with Fenn Foods' vEEF, forming 'The Aussie Plant Based Co.' Animal-free fat to scale up Magic Valley expands Magic Valley has expanded into a new pilot facility at Co-Labs, which will increase production capacity up to 150,000kg of product per year. Global developments Plant-based action plan Denmark has unveiled the world’s first national action plan for a transition to plant-based foods.
