Update on SH1 and SH11 speed reviews

Kia ora kōtou

There has been significant disruption for our communities with recent heavy rainfall and flooding in Northland, and we acknowledge this is a difficult time. We firstly hope you and your whānau are safe and well. While clean-up and repairs continue, we encourage people to drive with care and to the conditions.

We are emailing you to update you on speed limit changes for Northland’s State Highway 1 Moerewa to Kawakawa and State Highway 11 Puketona to Paihia.

Decision on speed reviews

Last year we invited feedback in our formal consultation process for the speed reviews on these state highways.

We have considered all submissions received during consultation, and appreciate the time that those of you spent providing your feedback. Your insights and the insights received by the local community and road users provided us valuable information to ensure speeds are safe and appropriate for the state highways and everyone who uses them.

Together with the information gathered through consultation and our technical review process, our decision on the speed limit changes is to implement the proposed speeds as outlined in the tables below, taking effect from Monday 24 August.

Closer to this date we will communicate these changes more widely so people are aware that new speed limits are coming into force.

Roundabout at Puketona intersection

We are committed to improving safety in this area and are also upgrading the SH10/11 intersection at Puketona to a roundabout. Construction on the roundabout has begun and we expect it to be completed by April next year.

Read more about this intersection upgrade here.

Please note that during construction we will have a temporary lower speed limit in place at the roundabout construction site to keep our site workers safe.
