7,000 reasons to celebrate National Tree Day in Casey

Casey’s National Tree Day event on Sunday 27 July was a blooming success!
Held in Cranbourne West, over 340 enthusiastic volunteers came together to plant 7,000 native trees, shrubs, and ground cover species.

Creating connections between patches of vegetation is essential for our native wildlife. Important corridors, such as powerline easements where our planting took place this year, make it easier for wildlife to navigate through the urban environment. With this newly added vegetation, it will give the local wildlife a safe place to feed, sleep and move through in the future.  🖼️ S. Charles

Tricky Takeaway Packaging Disposal – Part 1

We’ve moved away from plastic cutlery, straws, and polystyrene containers because they caused environmental harm and ended up in landfill. Now we have “better” options—but where do they go?

Right now, most still go in the landfill bin. The napkin might be OK for your food and garden waste bin. Everything else? Not recyclable. Not compostable (unless you're doing it at home)

But why switch if they still go to landfill?

Because if littered, these new items break down more naturally—no microplastics.

Why not compost them?

FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics) facilities compost quickly and are designed for things like food and sticks. Items like wooden cutlery and paper plates don’t break down fast enough and often stay whole. They get filtered out and sent to landfill.

Clamshell containers are especially risky—they might hide things like foil, cans, or even glass, which can ruin an entire compost batch.

Why not recycle them?

  • Wooden cutlery isn’t recyclable—wrong shape and material.
  • Paper/cardboard food packaging is often plastic-lined, food-contaminated, or made from sugarcane—also not recyclable.

So what can you do?

BYO cutlery, straws, and napkins.

Politely decline extras if you don’t need them.

Ask if you can bring your own containers—maybe start the conversation when you're not ordering food, or reach out via email or phone if you're shy.
