The Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway project is re-starting this week under COVID-19 Alert Level 3.
The return-to-work is being staged over three days.
“We’ve focused on the safety of our staff by maintaining their personal bubbles, reducing the number of site access points, installing additional wash stations, creating smaller smoko areas and reconfiguring our office so teams there can create safe work bubbles,’’ says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency acting portfolio manager Jo Wilton.
“We are re-inducting all staff and sub-contractors over three days to ensure everyone understands and complies with the new Level 3 rules. All our office staff who can work from home will continue to do so.” These standards are the same across the construction and building sector.
The project has made a lot of progress over the summer and autumn but the Level 4 lockdown will inevitably affect the works programme. The project is due to open by late 2021. It is not yet clear what effect the Level 4 shutdown and Level 3 restrictions will have on that timeframe. Any change to the completion date will be communicated as soon as it is confirmed.
“Right now we’re concentrating on getting the project up and running safely and efficiently, to make the most of the favourable weather,” Ms Wilton says
