Record undergraduate applications for 2021-2022

A message from Dr Michael Sutherland, Fellow and Tutor for Undergraduate Admissions

I am writing to you in the midst of a very busy undergraduate admissions period, with interviews taking place online again this year to find the next cohort of Corpuscles, from a remarkable pool of 664 applicants. Our team of 15 student helpers are doing an excellent job in the virtual welcome rooms, helping candidates test their cameras and microphones and settling them down ahead of their online interview.

In the usual flurry of an action-packed term, it is almost a surprise, and most definitely a moment of pride and relief that we have reached the end of a successful Michaelmas Term. Surprise because it has gone so quickly, pride in what we have achieved, and relief that we have been able to offer a more normal student experience. Continue reading.

STEM SMART programme met with an overwhelming response

Over one thousand students have applied to the new STEM SMART widening participation programme since it was announced in September 2021. Corpus is one of the 12 Cambridge colleges supporting hundreds of UK state school students through their A-levels with enhanced learning, encouragement and mentoring as part of an initiative to address educational disadvantage. Tutor for Undergraduate Admissions Dr Michael Sutherland is the co-director of the programme. Continue reading.

Marlowe Dinner aka Halfway Hall (or Two-Thirds if you're being accurate!)

The 2021 Marlowe Dinner — also known as Halfway Hall — was postponed from its usual date in Lent due to COVID-19 restrictions, instead taking place during Michaelmas for the m2019 cohort’s third year. As such, it was aptly renamed ‘Two-Thirds Way Hall’. Following tradition, students brought a 'special item' to represent their College experience.

Students, Fellows and alumni network at the Institute for Mechanical Engineering

At the end of November, the College was pleased to host a fantastic networking event for engineering students and alumni, thanks to the generosity of Peter Flinn, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE). We hope the event, held at the IMechE in London, will be the first of many networking events that bring together students and alumni, potentially leading to valuable professional mentoring opportunities.

"I really appreciated the opportunity to visit this incredible institution, and meeting some of the Corpus alumni members there was great. Hearing about their careers was inspiring and I look forward hopefully to doing the same with a wider group of alumni in the future."

Alumna in the spotlight

In the latest Tech Nation 2021 report, only 25 percent of the tech workforce are women.

Jessica Figueras (English, 1991) is becoming a big name in the cyber security arena. Nominated for Computer Weekly's Most Influential Women in UK Tech 2021, not only is she an advocate for increasing gender balance and equality in tech, but in her capacity as Vice-Chair of the UK Cyber Security Council, she hopes to directly further those aims.
