SH10 Awanui to Kaingaroa

Safer speeds for your roads - engagement summary

People in your community have told us that the speed limit on SH10 between Awanui and Kaingaroa feels too high to be safe.

What we heard

In July and August we asked what you thought about both the current speeds and the proposed limits on this stretch of State Highway 10.

Thank you to the hundreds of Northlanders who gave us their thoughts. Here are the main themes of what you told us.

  • Lower speeds were justified between Awanui and Kaingaroa, especially at Kareponia and Kaingaroa.
  • The proposed 80km/h was not low enough for Kareponia and Kaingaroa. Many people felt 50km/h or 60km/h would be better in these villages.
  • People felt the current speed between Kaingaroa and Taipa felt safe at 100km/h
  • Some people felt the speed limit on SH10 between Awanui and Waimanoni Road should also be reviewed.
  • Awanui has grown and the speed limit sign on SH10 needs to be moved back further past the house movers.
  • People supported lower speeds around schools especially in Taipa and Kaingaroa.
  • People were concerned at the poor condition and design of the road – particularly how narrow the road is in a number of areas.

Review of current speed limits

What we’re now proposing

We’ve looked at these community insights alongside our technical analysis of what is the safe and appropriate speed for this road. We are now coming back to the community to formally consult on the following proposed speed limit changes along SH10 Awanui to Kaingaroa:

  • Reduce the speed from 100km/h to 80km/h between Awanui and Kareponia
  • Reduce the speed from 100km/h to 60km/h through Kareponia village
  • Reduce the speed from 100km/h to 80 km/h between the villages of Kareponia and Kaingaroa
  • Reduce the speed from 100km/h to 60 km/h through Kaingaroa village
  • Reduce the speed from 100km/h to 80 km/h from Kaingaroa village to Pukewhai Road
  • Extend the existing 50km/h speed limit in Awanui by 180m further east

You can provide feedback:

- online via nzta.govt.nz/northland-speed-reviews
- or email it to northland.speed.reviews@nzta.govt.nz
