Cracks have been discovered above this slip on SH25 Storm damage repairs for SH25 south of KūaotunuState Highway 25 (SH25) south of Kūaotunu will close in both directions for up to three days from 9am Monday 9 February so crews can repair storm damage above the road. Following a geotechnical assessment, cracks have been identified above an existing slip caused by last month’s severe weather. The area is being closely monitored and the road will remain open through the long weekend before closing so repair work can be carried out safely. The road is expected to reopen by late Wednesday 11 February, weather permitting. While the closure is in place, anyone travelling between Kūaotunu and Whitianga will need to detour via SH25 and SH25A. Once the road has reopened we will let the community know by updating our Journey Planner, social media pages and via media release. Cleanup and recovery work is continuing around the Coromandel following the storms, with a number of sites reduced to one lane. This includes a 2-kilometre-long section of stop/go traffic management on SH25 at Pumpkin Hill, north of Tairua, which contains multiple slip sites. Cleanup work across the district is expected to continue throughout February, with stabilisation work required at several sites before roads can safely be reopened to two lanes. Anyone planning to travel to the Coromandel is advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journey and expect to see traffic management and speed restrictions at a number of locations. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks the Coromandel community and visitors for their patience while we go about restoring full access to SH25. |
