Pepe Bridge plans draw good crowd

About 170 people attended an information session at Tairua to hear plans for the replacement of the single-lane Pepe Stream Bridge.

How the new 2-lane bridge with attached shared walking and cycling path will impact on Pepe Road intersection traffic was an issue raised by many who attended the drop-in session. This has been collated for inclusion in the design work ahead.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) expects to have a Design and Construct contract in place by year’s end, the new bridge designed and consented ahead of construction starting late 2026, with traffic on the new bridge by December 2027.

Geotech investigations underway

Geotechnical work is ramping up for the new Pepe Stream Bridge.

Locals will see a barge and drilling rig, similar to that pictured, near the existing bridge for a few days from Monday 26 May.

Core samples will be taken to help understand the geology beneath the bridge. The 5-metre barge and rig will be trucked in separately and put together at the Wharf Street boat ramp.

The same crew will be taking samples on the bridge approaches and verges the following week. There will be same traffic management required but no delays are expected.
