International Day of Women and Girls in Science Breakfast

Tuesday 11 February | 7am - 9:30am | IndigiScapes Cafe

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an annual celebration endorsed by the United Nations. The theme for this year is 'Women in STEM: Her Voice Matters'.

IndigiScapes celebrates with an annual breakfast, hosted by Ranger Stacey. Guests will enjoy a delicious breakfast in the beautiful natural surroundings of IndigiScapes Cafe, while listening to the speakers, plus time for Q&A and networking.

The presentation provides a platform for four impressive speakers with backgrounds in Environmental Science. They will demonstrate a variety of pathways, including tertiary study, Citizen Science and volunteer work that will inspire a new generation of women to expand their own passion for science.

Rosalie Eustace

Rosalie is a keen botanist with a love for native plants, a horticulturalist, educator and artist. In the year of Redlands IndigiScapes Centre's 25th anniversary, it is fitting that our first speaker is Rosalie Eustace. Rosalie established the first ever Bushcare group in the Redlands and worked on behalf of Council to establish an Environment Centre, opening the doors in February 2000 to what we now know as Redlands IndigiScapes Centre.

Dr Valerie Hagger

Dr Valerie Hagger holds a research fellowship at the University of Queensland, where her focus includes conservation and restoration science in unique coastal wetlands, as well as working in partnership with CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy and Healthy Land and Water. She recently led a National Environmental Science Program (NESP) project on coastal wetland restoration opportunities in Australia for blue carbon and co-benefits for biodiversity, fisheries, water quality and coastal protection.

Deborah Metters

Highly regarded Ecologist and Land for Wildlife Regional Coordinator for South-east Queensland, Deborah Metters, will share her knowledge about ecological restoration, wildlife conservation and her passion for birds.

Vivian Sandovel

Entomologist Vivian Sandovel will discuss how she became an entomologist, the challenges of undertaking insect research as well as exploring how and why she linked art and science, as the creator of her business 'Bugs & Beads'.

Happy 25th birthday IndigiScapes!

This year marks 25 years since IndigiScapes first opened its doors. The centre has provided information and educational workshops to the community, worked with numerous incredible volunteers who gave their time to improve the natural environment, supplied Redlands Coast with delicious coffee and local native plant species and become a place where we can share, grow and learn together.

Thank you for supporting IndigiScapes - we can't wait to see what the future holds!

Providing water for wildlife

All life on earth requires water to survive, including our native wildlife, from insects to birds, reptiles and amphibians. Providing a water source can help wildlife while also encouraging them to spend more time in your garden.

Hot tips:

  • Use a bowl or bird bath and place it in an area that is not in direct sunlight.
  • Try to keep your water source raised off the ground to discourage cane toads, or if it is a permanent structure like a pond, be sure to densely plant around it to impede toad movement.
  • Clean the water regularly to limit mosquito activity.
  • Place sticks and rocks in the water to provide insects and birds a safe landing space and an escape route for smaller lizards.

Frog hotels
Another way to help wildlife in the summer months is to provide habitat for frogs using frog hotels. If you want to learn how to make one for your back yard, visit our website.

For more information. check out Ranger Stacey's Nature Calendar video on providing water for wildlife!
