Intersection improvements at Loop Road/Otaika Valley Road

Over the summer months the project team has been working on safety improvements at the intersection of Otaika Valley Road and Loop Road (south). These works include:

• constructing of a concrete speed table on the Loop Road (south) side of the intersection to slow vehicles down when entering and exiting Loop Road (south)
• road widening Otaika Valley Road/SH15 near the intersection with Loop Road
• removing of the old concrete bus shelter on Loop Road/SH15
• installing footpaths on Loop Road (south) and Otaika Valley Road (through the intersection area only)
• installing three new streetlights at the intersection.

Works are expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

Upcoming pavement works

Portland Road intersection
Overnight pavement works are planned for Portland Road intersection in March. We will confirm the dates for asphalting towards the end of this month.

Works north of roundabout
The 'old' state highway on the eastern side is now being dug up and rebuilt, to match the standards of the new road we’re all now driving on now. This will also be asphalted but, as it is behind the barriers, it won’t disrupt traffic.

Weeding and maintenance works on the roundabout

The roundabout has been treated to some well overdue maintenance, after a good dose of sunshine and recent rain has encouraged weeds to thrive.

Maintenance will continue during construction, with permanent planting and landscaping of the roundabout to occur towards the end of the project.

Loop Road and the four-laning project

Many of our customers are asking us about the relationship between the Loop Road project and the SH1 Whangarei to Port Marsden Highway project, often referred to as the 'four-laning' project.

Designers from both project teams are currently working together to work out how the four-laning project will connect in with the roundabout at Loop Road. 

While this design work is being undertaken, the Loop Road team are continuing construction works at Portland Road intersection, north of the roundabout and at the intersection of Otaika Valley Road/SH15 and Loop Road (south).

We expect to have more details to share in our next project update.
