Final surfacing, in November, of Halswell Road between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard.

Looking forward to completion and looking back

Kia ora and season’s greetings,

As we head into Christmas, we would like to let you know what to expect during the holiday break, and what’s coming in the New Year. Plus, we’ll take a quick look back at the progress we’ve made - including the recent final surfacing of Halswell Road between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard.

Our crews will down tools for a deserved break from Wednesday, 17 December 2025, returning Tuesday, 13 January 2026, although some minor electrical work will likely start on Tuesday 6 January but won’t require any significant traffic management. This will also be a deserved break, from noise and interruptions, for residents and the community.

Traffic management has been removed from Dunbars Road to Augustine Drive/ Monsaraz Boulevard as work in this section is all but finished. Elsewhere, it will remain in place over the summer break to ensure the safety of road users.

Between Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard and Curletts Road, lanes will remain narrow, cyclists will share lanes with vehicles, and the speed limit will stay at 30km/h. Barriers and pedestrian crossing lights will also remain.

We’ll tidy the site, remove as many cones and fences as we can safely, and keep side streets open.

Fulton Hogan staff will check the site daily, but if you spot something that needs attention, please call them on 0800 ROAD FH (0800 7623 34).

Thank You
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this year’s disruptions. The good news is the project will be completed next year!

Wishing you happy holidays and safe travels.

What’s next in early in 2026

When the crews start back, the focus will be on the northbound side between Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard and Curletts Road.

They will:
• Build the shared user path including final surfacing
• Sow grass berms
• Install the raised centre median
• Complete final road surfacing and line marking
• Add tactile pavers at crossings for visually impaired pedestrians
• Continue upgrading street lighting

Traffic lights at Rowley Avenue, Warren Crescent (west), and the pedestrian crossing near Tankerville Road are expected to go live in the second quarter of the year.

Building the new road in layers

Looking back

Much of this year has been about building the new road including kerb and channelling. However, solid progress has been made this year in several areas as you can see from the progress graphic below.

Final surfacing between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard

This milestone was completed last month at night, avoiding peak traffic, and minimising disruption. This meant we were able to pave wider areas, deliver a smoother, more durable surface with fewer joins improving the overall travel experience for everyone using the road.

The 68 staff on site each night worked 3,575 hours, the Pavements Engineer Manager walked 80km over the 5 nights, 20,713m² of road was asphalted with 20 trucks carting in mix each night!

New intersections

• The Aidanfield Drive intersection was completed and the new traffic lights went live in March.
• Rowley Avenue and Warren Crescent (west) are ready for their lights to be switched on next year.

Also, new traffic light phasing was introduced at the Dunbars Road intersection together with a dedicated left turn lane, replacing the slip lane from Dunbars Road on to Halswell Road.

Shared paths

It was good news for people walking and cycling with the opening, in stages, of the shared path on each side of the road between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard. This has given cyclists an off-road option along this section of Halswell Road.

Infrastructure upgrades - boosting resilience

• The crews replaced old clay sewer pipes dating back to 1950s with new 150mm diameter PVC pipes along the approach to the Curletts Road/Hoon Hay intersection.
• We completed installing 750mm diameter concrete stormwater pipes where previously there were none.
• We also partnered with Christchurch City Council to help deliver an upgrade to the water main (pipe) between Templetons Road and Curletts Road.

These upgrades are a part of a wider effort to improve infrastructure in the area.
By installing these pipes at the same time as our other work we’ve saved time, reduced disruption and are keeping the road in better shape for longer.
Like other services, we installed the new pipes under the footpath and grass berm instead of under the road, making it easier to repair and maintain in the future without having to dig up the new road.

In the community

The team from Fulton Hogan spent time with children from Airdmhor Montessori in October. The kids enjoyed watching the digger at work and learning about the road works.
