State Highway 20B Early Improvements Update

State Highway 20B Project Updates keep you up-to-date with project progress and upcoming physical works on State Highway 20B (SH20B).

Private vehicles and through-traffic should detour and use SH20A during the weekend closure.

UPCOMING WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR SH20B - from 9pm Friday 26 February to 5am Monday 1 March

Waka Kotahi is planning an upoming weekend closure of SH20B to through-traffic between the Tom Pearce/SH20B roundabout and the SH20 Interchange for the last weekend of February for the pavement works along Waokauri Creek Bridge and other essential works that cannot take place safely during normal working hours.

The weekend closure will be between

9pm Friday 26 February to 5am Monday 1 March.

Manukau Memorial Gardens will remain open, and resident/business access to Campana and Prices Roads including Colin Dale Park and Puhinui Reserve will be available from the eastern approach to SH20B.

People on foot and on bikes can access SH20B throughout the weekend.

AirportLink bus service will be operational as usual. But bus users may experience a slight delay during this time. Please plan ahead and use the journey planner for up-to-date travel times.

Activities next week (21 - 28 February)

Please note that some works are weather dependent and may be delayed.

During the day (from 7am to 7pm)

Zone 1 (from Pukaki Creek Bridge to East of Campana Road)

• Continue signal works at Campana Road
• Backfill the redesigned swale near Campana Road
• Shared use path works near Campana Road and near the northern Airport viewing platform
• Prepare and topsoil either side of the shared use path from the Aviation Security gate  to Pukaki Creek Bridge, and from Orrs Road to Campana Road
• Prepare verges for chip sealing from Pukaki Creek Bridge to the Aviation Security gate
• Complete  drainage at the northern Airport viewing platform
• Kerb and channel work around Campana Road
• Complete verge backfilling and prepare for barrier installation between the northern Airport viewing platform and Orrs Road
• Continue drainage work and apply top soil between the Airport viewing platform and Campana Road
• Install the wire rope safety barriers near Pukaki Creek Bridge, beside the shared use path and up to Orrs Road
• Complete pavement for driveways between Orrs Road and Campana Road
• Complete verge preparation beside the concrete barriers and complete barriers at the Campana Road intersection.

Waokauri Creek Bridge

• Railings and anti-climb Brackets are currently going through the final works to be placed for later in February

Zone 2 (from East of Campana Road to the SH20 interchange)

• Drainage line installation continues opposite Manukau Memorial Gardens to Prices Road
• Shared use path construction continues under the SH20 Interchange and overpass
• Concrete subbase between Black Bridge Nursery and the SH20 Interchange
• Continue service trench installation between Prices Road and the SH20 Interchange
• Prepare the shared use path from the Manukau Memorial Gardens to the SH20 Interchange
• Install subsoil drainage in front of Black Bridge Nursery
• Prepare the shared use path near Prices Road to Waokauri Bridge South.
• Prepare concrete infills from the Waokauri Creek Bridge to Prices Road
• Install concrete barriers from Waokauri Creek Bridge to Black Bridge Nursery
• Install under-kerb drainage and kerbing to Prices Road
• Install precast barriers from Prices Road to Black Bridge Nursery
• Prepare and pour driveways near Waokauri Creek Bridge and Prices Road
• Prepare and install kerbing from Black Bridge Nursery to the SH20 Interchange
• Install traffic signals at the SH20 Interchange (north)

Utilities (throughout the site)

• Install service ducts from Prices Road to the SH20 Interchange
• Continue common service trench installation between Black Bridge Nursery and the SH20 Interchange

At night (all zones from 9pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday)

The road will be OPEN to through traffic, but STOP/GO traffic controls and traffic lights will operate.

Please drive safely and allow extra time for your journey

• Asphalt pavement replacement continues along the existing carriageway between Pukaki Creek Bridge and SH20
• SH20 under-bridge shared use path works.

Safety

SH20B has introduced the following safety measures to protect all road and shared path users including two temporary signalised road crossings for people on foot and on bikes:

• All traffic must turn left both into and out of properties and side roads. Manukau Memorial Gardens is exempt from left-turn movements
• Vehicles turning into driveways and side roads on the southern side must watch for bikes and foot traffic on the temporary shared cycle and walking path
• The speed limit for SH20B is 50kph from Manukau Memorial Gardens to Tom Pearce Drive, except at crossing points and coned paving areas where the speed will briefly drop to 30kph

Project overview

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading State Highway 20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20.

This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct along SH20B and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.

Fulton Hogan undertakes this work on behalf of Waka Kotahi.

Key early improvements on State Highway 20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

• A safe place for people to walk and ride bikes
• Safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
• Improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment
• Two improved intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens.
