New safer, wider bridge opens over Northern Motorway at Albany

A new longer and wider bridge has opened over the Northern Motorway (SH1) to give motorists and people walking and cycling a safer connection to public transport, schools and business and retail areas at Albany.

The new McClymonts Road Bridge has been completed as part of the project, allowing the extended Northern Busway to pass underneath.

A section of McClymonts Road has been fully closed over the past three weeks so that a new road surface could be laid on the bridge and the finishing touches added to the roundabouts at each end. The bridge includes lanes for vehicles as well as an extra wide 4 metre walking and cycling path on each side.

The old McClymonts Road Bridge has had to be replaced with a new longer bridge so the motorway underneath can be widened with extra traffic lanes, the extended Northern Busway and a new shared path.

The old bridge will now be demolished piece by piece over a series of nights in the next few months.

Saving water during the shortage

We are playing our part to help Auckland's water shortage since restrictions have come into place this month.

We are now sourcing water from Western Springs Reserve and Lake Pupuke through Watercare, instead of using water from the main supply for the city.

This is non treated water that can be used on our site but isn't suitable for drinking. We use this for washing wheels to keep the roads clean and stabilising roads.

Our water trucks also spray areas of the project where dust is created, to stop it from spreading out into the local area.

Night shift back on board

It was a busy, wet Sunday night in May for the bridge team as 6 beams were delivered for the new Albany Bus Bridge across the Northern Motorway. The 30 metre, 60 tonne beams were lifted into place by two cranes as part of work to complete the span.

The beams lift will feature in a story by Stuff reporters for a NZ On Air sponsored documentary series about night shift workers who keep the country moving. Our Bridges Manager and Traffic Engineer were interviewed about their roles and what they like and dislike about working nights while everyone else sleeps.

Other work taking place at night included more beams being installed at Greville and Rosedale Bus Bridges. The work took place under Alert Levels 3 and 2 with a range of new measures in place, such as restricted access to the construction site and requirements for workers to maintain physical distancing.
