State Highway 20B is open for business!

23 April 2021

Kia ora koutou,

On Friday 16th of April we had some very special guests to celebrate the opening of the new bus priority lanes and the shared use path along State Highway 20B - just in time for the trans-Tasman bubble which opened on Monday!  This is a huge milestone as we work to support clean, green transport networks in Auckland.

With the new Campana Road intersection in the back ground, Transport Minister Michael Wood joined multiple project partners were on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Time for celebration with the project team

15 months of hard work by everyone involved did not go unnoticed as more than 80 people gathered to celebrate this monumental milestone.

Final surfacing, services, landscaping and safety work are continuing along the highway.  But the team pushed hard to get the road open as early as possible to allow commuters and people walking and on bikes to enjoy the new look.

The opening event was a lovely afternoon well spent mixing and mingling with all of the wonderful people who played a part in this project - including our close neighbours who have seen the work unfold in a very short time.  Thank you for your patience and support!

Story

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading State Highway 20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20.

This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct along SH20B and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.

Fulton Hogan undertakes this work on behalf of Waka Kotahi.

Key early improvements on State Highway 20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

  • A safe place for people to walk and ride bikes
  • Safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
  • Improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment
  • Two improved intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency works to create transport solutions for all New Zealanders – from helping new drivers earn their licences, to leading safety campaigns to investing in public transport, state highways and local roads.
