COVID-19 Pānui no. 83

E ngā pā harakeke o ngā iwi ō ngā hapu ō ngā whānau ō ngā Kōhanga Reo, tēnā koutou e ngā pātū o te ora.

Covid is slowly making its way across the country, and our whakaaro are with all our whānau who may be feeling anxious at this time. This is a time of uncertainty, and you may even be feeling hesitant around your own whānau and neighbours. Just remember e te whānau, no one wants Covid so there is no blame, just aim to look after each other, me aroha tonu tātou ki ā tātou.

E te whānau, Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust supports vaccination as a safety net to protect our whānau, mokopuna and Kaumātua. Vaccination also ensures businesses, Kura and Kōhanga Reo remain open, which means livelihoods can continue. No reira e tuku ana i te aroha ki ngā rohe o Te Taitokerau, Tāmaki Makaurau, Tauranga, Te Moana a Toi Te Huatahi ki Waimana me Waitaha Te Waipounamu, kia kaha ki a tātou.

On another note, summer is upon us and on our “Whaioranga” podcast today we had Lavinia Rongo, a Manu Pīrere of Te Kōhanga Reo o Tahuri mai, along with Rob Hewitt, promoting water safety for our mokopuna and whānau. Head to our Facebook Page and Youtube channel to view their kōrero.

Āpōpō Tāmaki Makaurau will trial the new covid protection framework with the soft opening of Barbers and Hairdressers. Nō reira kia ngawari te haere kia haumaru te haere, kia korowaitia tātou e te aroha, Ngā mihi.

Current situation

Today, there are 215 new cases in the community:

  • 181 in Tāmaki Makaurau
  • 18 in Waikato
  • 3 in Northland
  • 12 in Bay of Plenty
  • 1 in Canterbury

This brings our total community cases in the current outbreak to 7,484.

There are currently:

  • 87 people in hospital
  • 8 in ICU/HDU.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has started reporting the vaccination status of those who have died with COVID-19 in the current outbreak, as privacy considerations allow. Of the 15 deaths recorded by the MoH in the current outbreak to date, 10 of them were unvaccinated, two had one dose less than 14 days before they contracted the virus and three were fully vaccinated (at least 14 days prior to contracting COVID-19.

There is clear evidence that the COVID-19 vaccination greatly reduces the likelihood that people will end up in hospital or die from the virus. A British Medical Journal study found that the Pfizer vaccine was 90 percent effective in preventing death from COVID-19, where most infections were caused by the Delta variant.

Six of today’s new cases in the Bay of Plenty are known close contacts and were already in isolation prior to receiving a positive test result. Interviews with three of the cases are underway to determine the source of their infection, which includes a case in Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Today’s new case in Canterbury has been deemed historical and is no longer considered infectious. The case is a close contact of a previously reported case.

It was announced today that under the red and orange traffic light settings, all pool and leisure centres in Tāmaki Makaurau will require all visitors aged 12 and over to be fully vaccinated. On 3 December, gyms, group fitness, and recreation centres will open in Tāmaki Makaurau to those with vaccination passes. Meanwhile, pools will reopen on December 6, allowing centres to be recommissioned and heated.
