Construction funding is approved

We are pleased to announce Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport Boards have approved funding to complete the remaining sections of the Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path.

The shared path will connect with Auckland’s expanding cycle network and will become one of the city’s most scenic bike routes, not only popular with commuters but also providing local connections to shops and public transport.

What happens next?

Section 2 (St Johns Road to Ōrākei Basin)

Tendering for the construction contract for this section got underway in January, so if funding was secured construction work could start quickly. We expect to award a contract in April and work will start shortly after that.

We will know more about the construction timeline once we have a construction partner on board. You will receive updates via this newsletter and we will hold open days for the community to meet the team and learn more about the construction phase. We will also share the design plans with you, which are being finalised following feedback from the community received late 2018.

Please let us know if there is anything specific you would like to know or questions you have and we will ensure this information is included in our next update or available at our open days.

Section 4 (Ōrākei Basin to Tāmaki Drive)

We are lodging for resource consent to construct Section 4. This will be a notified consent and Auckland Council will contact anyone they think is directly affected by the proposal and anyone can have a chance to have their say.

You can learn more about this process on the Auckland Council website. We will send an update via newsletter when this process has started.

When will the project be completed?

We want to deliver Sections 2 and 4 at approximately the same time by the end of 2022. This will provide a safe, continuous connection all the way to Tāmaki Drive and means that more people can use the shared path for journeys into the city centre and beyond.

The timeline to complete Section 4 will depend on the duration of the consenting phase and feedback submitted to Auckland Council during this phase as well as any other council conditions. We are doing what we can to get construction-ready, including completing the detailed design at the same time as seeking resource consent. The community will have the opportunity to help shape design aspects of the path through a consultation process later in the year.

Tāmaki Drive Cycle Route construction has started

Work has started on what will be an important connection into the city centre from the Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path. The upgrade to Tāmaki Drive (between Ngapipi Road and The Strand intersections) will deliver a two-way separated cycleway and improved pedestrian facilities. The project also improves flood protection by lifting the road.

The Tāmaki Drive Cycle Route will connect to the Quay Street cycleway enabling people to travel on separated cycling facilities all the way into the city centre. More people will use a bike when cycle paths are connected, so we are delighted to hear this great project is getting underway.
