New Alexandra underpass opens up walking and cycling in Unsworth

Work is progressing on a new, safer path for pedestrians and cyclists which will provide a link under the SH18 motorway, as part of the Northern Corridor Improvements project. The Alexandra Underpass is a new feature from Rook Reserve in Unsworth Heights which connects to local paths and into the industrial estate on the other side of the motorway.

The new path will replace the old underpass and will be built to withstand one off flooding events. It also features safer and wider entrances with a clear view to the other side, lighting and CCTV cameras to improve security.

The existing underpass will stay open during construction of the new underpass and the SH18 motorway lanes. When the new path opens in 2021, the old underpass will be converted to a stormwater culvert and closed off.

The new underpass is being built with funding from Auckland Transport, Auckland Council and the NZ Transport Agency.

New bus bridge spans Constellation Drive

Work has started to build a new 75 metre long busway bridge over Constellation Drive. This will enable buses to travel along the new busway and enter Constellation Station. A new shared path for walking and cycling will also connect to the bridge.

Piling will be starting this month on the northern bridge piers followed by constructing the columns and retaining walls. The central pier will be built in the middle of Constellation Drive. There won’t be any disruption during the day for people entering local businesses or the station. Some traffic restrictions will be in place at night.

When the bridge is completed, the current citybound off-ramp lanes will stay the same and the existing bus lane connection to Constellation Station will be removed.

McClymonts Road Bridge

Construction of the new McClymonts Road Bridge has been underway for the past 12 months.  A significant amount of work has taken place at night over recent months to install steel beams and concrete panels. We would like to thank all our residents and commuters for your patience during this time.

Traffic will be moved onto the new bridge in stages later this year and then the old bridge will be demolished. The new bridge will make it easier and safer for people to access Albany Station.
