Upper Hutt safety improvements to begin this weekend

We are making some safety improvements to State Highway 2 between the Whakatiki St and Fergusson Dr intersections in Upper Hutt.

We know thousands of people use this road every day, whether it’s to get to work or school, to visit family and friends, to pick up their groceries or to see the doctor. Wherever people are going, we want them to be able to get there and back safely – which is why making this corridor safer for all road users is a priority.

Work will see the installation of median barriers along four kilometres of the motorway. Parts of the road shoulder will also be widened to accommodate the new median barriers.

There will also be some changes to the road layout in localised areas, as well as side barriers extended at the Tōtara Park Road intersection.

Safety improvements like these will help cut crash numbers and mean that if a crash does happen, those involved are more likely to avoid serious injuries or death.

These works are part of the wider SH2 Ngāūranga to Featherston safety improvements project. To find out more please visit the project website.

Working with Higgins

From Sunday 7 May, we'll be working with Higgins to complete these safety improvements.

The project will take approximately five months, with most work taking place overnight from Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm to 5.30am.

Please expect temporary speed limits and stop/go traffic management around worksites.

There will be some minor resurfacing works that will be weather dependent, but we will keep any disruption to a minimum.

Our scope of work can be seen in the map above.

We'll share additional updates as work gets underway, and any changes or updates will be communicated via our channels:

Throughout construction, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the project team: SH2HuttValley@nzta.govt.nz
