For those of you who would like to get a little crafty we will be supplying craft packs to you and your children starting from Monday the 8th of November. These craft packs will be themed each week with a free craft pack to take home as well as a suggested book display to inspire and engage your little ones. Next week we are going under the sea with a nautical theme, inspired by Heads and Tails: Underwater by John Canty which can be viewed for free from our Story Box Library online. If you are interested in one of our craft packs, simply come into the children’s library during opening hours and ask one of our friendly staff at the desk. In the early hours of 26 February 1918, the British hospital ship Glenart Castle steamed into the Bristol Channel, heading for France to pick up wounded men from the killing fields of the Western Front. In March 1945 Reg Cleworth, a navigator on PBY Catalina seaplanes flying out of Darwin, went missing in action. No details were ever given about the incident that took his life. For Reg’s younger brother, Robert, the news came as a prophecy fulfilled. Forty years later Robert decided to investigate what happened to his brother. In a desperate attempt to aid the Allies' cause 800 young Australian horsemen set off against gunfire and insurmountable odds in a last ditch attempt to save the attacking British soldiers from imminent annihilation by the Turco-German Army. LOCAL STUDIES ![]() LOCAL HISTORY: REMEMBRANCE DAY An inheritance of letters, photos and memorabilia left in a suitcase write a war time love story that ended in mystery. Emmie Chester joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in France in 1917. Here, she met 'Mac', an Australian working as part of the concert personnel entertaining troops. Engaged, the pair stayed in Rouen after the war ended, but Emmie was asked to return home to care for her mother. Mac returned to Australia, where they continued to write, but Emmie stopped responding for reasons unknown - although Mac's photo remained on Emmie's mantlepiece until her death in 1988. Mac's address on his last letter to Emmie in 1945 was listed as 14 Riverina Flats, 3 Park Pde, Waverley.
