What's happening in your Neighbourhood?

Kāinga Ora is continuing to deliver social housing projects across the region.

In our last newsletter we shared that some of our social housing developments were under assessment, while we confirmed our Build programme for the next two years.

As decisions have been made, we have updated, and will continue to update, the information on our interactive maps (Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika) and the upcoming newsletters. If a site is still showing as under assessment, this means no decisions have been made about that particular site.

Where a project has changed from being under assessment to proceeding, it means we are now progressing with the design phase of the project, which will be followed by the resource consent stage. This may include a redesign of previous site designs communicated for a site.

Please note: Like all developers, our plans can change as we progress through planning and consenting processes, and in some cases, the project may not proceed.

Site specific updates:

Westport:

11-13 Haselden Street, Westport
Construction on four single-level two-bedroom homes is underway and proceeding well. It is currently anticipated that South Peak Homes will complete these homes in June 2025, pending no unforeseen delays to the project.

Kāinga Ora is proposing to build eight new single-level homes, consisting of four one-bedroom homes and four two-bedroom home. Previously we had communicated that we were looking to build eight one-bedroom homes. An amendment to the resource consent application was lodged in April 2025.

If these plans go ahead, we would be looking to deliver them by June 2026.

This site has changed from 'under assessment' and is now in the 'changed confirmed' phase of the project. This means redevelopment plans are progressing for this site, which will see site investigations undertaken, to help finalise a feasible design option. At this stage Kāinga Ora is exploring options that include two homes for this site. If these plans go ahead, we would be looking to deliver them by June 2026.

Brown and Son Construction 2009 Limited is currently building eight new accessible two-bedroom homes, which Kāinga Ora will take ownership of once construction is complete and agreement conditions met. It's anticipated that these homes will be completed in June 2025.

Due to a change with this contract, please note that the company that we now have an agreement with has changed from Westland Homes Limited to Brown & Son Construction 2009 Limited. We previously communicated that these homes would be built to accessible standards, however this has been changed to Full Universal Design (FUD) standards. You can find out more about FUD standards here: Accessibility at Kāinga Ora :: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities
