Resealing starting on SH1

Kia ora,

This update is to let you know that you’ll soon see our contractor, HEB Construction, return to work for a scheduled reseal on SH1 between the Cam River and the SH71 (Lineside Road) overbridge.

It’s a key step in helping to make this section of highway safer and more resilient, with a chip seal giving better traction for vehicles and a hard-wearing surface.

Read on for answers to all your questions about this work!

What's involved?

The work is planned as follows, weather permitting:

• From Wed 16 November, 8pm-6am (for up to 3 nights): median barrier posts and wire removed

• Weekends of 19/20 and 26/27 November, daytime: sealing, with a detour for southbound traffic between Williams St and SH71 (Lineside Rd) via Williams St and Smith St

• Sat 19 November, 7am-10am: sealing under SH71 overbridge, with a detour for northbound traffic between SH71 (Lineside Rd) and Williams St via Smith St and Williams St

• From Wed 30 November, 8pm-6am (for up to 3 nights): median barrier post and wire reinstated

Traffic management will be in place including temporary speed limits, lane shifts and stop/go traffic direction at times, with cones positioned along the median for the duration of the work.

Why are you removing the median barrier?

The median barrier posts and high-tension wires are designed to be removed so that this type of road maintenance, and repairs to barrier strikes, can be easily carried out.

Being able to seal the full width of the road will create a better quality and more durable finish that will withstand highway traffic for the next 10 years plus.

Why are you doing this now?

The ‘first coat’ seal, which was applied to widen the road last summer, has had time to cure.

And, now that we’re into warmer weather, we’re able to return and apply the second coat of seal which adds a thick, durable and waterproof layer.

How can I keep up to date with delays or detours?

Sealing work is weather and temperature dependent.

Any delays due to weather will be shared on electronic message boards along the motorway. Detours will be clearly signposted.

Who can I contact?

For an urgent response to an on-site issue when work is underway, contact 0800 HEB CAN (0800 432 226) and press 7 to be put through to the worksite supervisor.

People with a general query about the project can email safetynorthcanterbury@nzta.govt.nz

What’s next?

The new seal will be given several months to fully ‘bed in’ before HEB Construction returns to complete the final step (applying high performance line markings and ‘rumble strips’) in February/March 2023.

Thank you

We apologise for the disruption caused by detours over coming weekends, and appreciate your cooperation with temporary speed limits and other safety measures as you travel through the work site.

This will not only protect our contractor’s crews, but will also help everyone on the road to get to their destination - and home again - safely.

Ngā mihi (Kind regards),

The Project Team

Night work on SH71 (Lineside Road)

People are urged to take extra care driving along SH71 (Lineside Road) from 7pm this Wednesday night, 9 November, when our contractor Fulton Hogan will be surveying along the highway.

We’re doing this work at night to minimise traffic disruption.  And to keep everyone safe, traffic management will be in place, including a shoulder closure and 30km/h temporary speed limit.

The work our crew will be doing includes using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to identify existing buried services, as well as line marking some recent road repairs (weather permitting).
