SH76 Brougham Street upgrade

SH76 Brougham Street upgrade

21 November 2023

Bridge concept testing

We received a lot of valuable feedback from the 3D design testing we did earlier this year for the planned pedestrian/cycle overbridge across SH76 Brougham Street.

This feedback, as well as feedback we received from the Bridge Feedback Group (BFG) is being used to help with the final design for the overbridge which we hope to share with you before Christmas. Thank you to everyone who took part to share their ideas and feedback.

Bridge feedback summary

You can read the summary of feedback from the BFG and the virtual walk-through sessions.

The main themes we received feedback on were:

• Safety
• Accessibility
• Design
• Landscaping/storytelling
• Lighting
• Environment
• Aspirations

A virtual walkthrough model was developed to share with session participants. This was a skeleton of the bridge and allowed participants to ‘walk or ride’ through the model and give their insights of how they felt the bridge would function both day and night.

It’s important to note the bridge shown in the video is purely a skeleton concept to give participants an idea of its function and form, and what it would feel like to walk or cycle over. It doesn’t reflect the final design of the overbridge or the material we will use to build it. Material, fixtures, fittings, landscaping and art will come next.

Detailed design and next steps

We welcomed GHD to the team back in July. They have been contracted to work on the detailed design for the entire project. There is a lot of work involved in this process, and includes working alongside an artist to share cultural and historic stories to bring the bridge to life.

We’ll be back in touch soon to share these concepts with you before Christmas.

Have we missed anything?

While we've received a lot of feedback already, we wanted to give everyone a chance to view the bridge concept and feedback to see if there is anything we may have missed.

After reading the summary of feedback and viewing the bridge skeleton, you can give us your feedback by completing this short survey before 30 November 2023.

Funding and construction

As we have been working through detailed design and consenting for the Brougham Street improvements project, it has become clear that we will be ready to start building the pedestrian/cycle overbridge component of the project before the other planned improvements.

The pedestrian/cycle overbridge will make a big difference to safety in this neighbourhood, and we want to start building this as soon as possible. To allow us to do this, we are going to split the project up into two stages, with stage one being the pedestrian/cycle overbridge.

Stage two will include the improvements to Brougham Street intersections, the T2 lanes and the shared path. This stage will take longer to get ready for construction, and we will move onto that stage as soon as we can. Splitting the project up means we can move ahead with the bridge construction as planned from September 2024.
