Local Studies: Bondi Yalunga Festival

90,000 people crowded down to the promenade in 1950 for the opening night fireworks of the Bondi Yalunga Festival. Meaning 'play' in the language of the Kamilaroi (Gamori) people of north-western NSW, the Yalunga Festival featured a World Championship Boomerang competition, traditional fire making and dance group performances, fishing competitions and an Aboriginal girls' choir. The highlight was the boomerang competition, won by local Aboriginal man Joe Timbery from La Perouse. Renowned for his skill in both boomerang throwing and making, Joe said ‘When I sell someone a boomerang, I teach him to bring it back in three throws’, otherwise ‘I won’t sell it to him because I don’t want to see my work wasted.’
