Urban design narrative
The Northern Corridor Improvements (NCI) project has contributed towards healthier transport options and an overall more resilient transport system.
Through partnership with Ngā Iwi Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau, the ancestral story of the region is told in the project through design. This includes acknowledging the importance of the awa (water), ara (tracks) and the ridges and valleys which traverse this area.
The mahi toi (artwork) which feature across the project not only reflect the important cultural landscape but create a welcoming and stunning community space for locals and visitors to enjoy.
There are three key themes across the project which are Taenga (arrival/welcome), Mahi (gathering/work) and Ngā Hau e Whā (navigation).
Read about the inspiration for the designs and how they have been embedded in the project here in the Urban design narrative.
For those of you who travel along the shared path, you will also see design story boards along the way sharing the story of the region reflecting its cultural history and importance.
