Night works this Tuesday 3 December

Thank you for your patience during night works last week. The team requires one further night of survey works on Tuesday 3 December.

Survey work on the state highway is planned to occur between 7pm - 4am on Tuesday night to minimise impacts on road users.

During these hours, sections of the state highway between the Waitaraire Bridge and Waiwhiu Road will be reduced to a single lane with stop/go traffic control.

The team are not using intrusive or noisy equipment during these night works so there will be no impact to residents living in proximity to SH1.

Please plan your journey, reduce your speed and take extra care travelling though the work area.

Retaining wall progress

Five retaining walls have been constructed so far, spanning over 400m in length. The retaining walls are a pivotal part of the Dome Valley project as they will allow the existing carriageway to be widened to accomodate safety barriers and widened centrelines.

There have been many challenges whilst constructing the retaining walls, including working around a fibre-optic cable that connects Auckland and Northland, and managing people and machinery alongside a high volume state highway.

Next steps for the southern end of the project

Over the next three months the project team are planning to:

  • Complete the road shoulder widening on the northbound shoulder between Grimmer bridge and Sheepworld
  • Complete the final retaining wall on the northbound section between Grimmer bridge and Sheepworld
  • Move SH1 traffic across so works can start on the southbound shoulder south of Sheepworld
  • Construct a turnaround bay at Sheepworld and at Christine Place
  • Install a W-Section barrier along the northbound shoulder.

What's happening at the northern end?

Works on the second section of the safety improvements project commenced a few months ago south of the Hoteo River bridge.

After installing temporary steel safety barriers, the team have started exposing the existing underground services and removing vegetation.

The project team are now installing environmental and sediment controls to protect the environment and landscape whilst construction work is carried out.

Shoulder widening works are programmed to start in January. Additional steel safety barriers will be installed and the northbound passing lane (south of the Hoteo bridge) will be closed for approximately two months during these works.
