Current traffic management to remain in place through the Tāngarākau Gorge for a further 6 weeks

We’re extremely grateful for the patience and cooperation of the community and regular users of the Forgotten World Highway as crews have carried out works in the Tāngarākau Gorge over the summer.

Since our last update, crews have sealed close to 4 kilometres of road and completed the largest of the 4 retaining walls we secured additional funding to build at the end of last year.

But despite everyone’s best efforts, crews have not been able to complete as much work on the retaining walls as expected due to wet weather and consenting requirements.

To keep the project on track, we are extending the existing traffic management through to mid-May. Doing so will enable the second retaining wall to be completed and also allow the maintenance contractor to repair a wash out in the gorge at the same time.

We understand that an extension of this traffic management will be frustrating in the short term but completing the works this season will improve the road’s resilience to winter weather and reduce the risk of future damage and delay. We hope you’ll understand this approach.

The closure times will remain as 9am-12pm, and 1pm-3pm, Monday- Friday, until 15 May 2024.

Stop/go traffic control will be in place between 7am and 8.30am and 3.30pm and 7pm with 15 minute delays.

As currently occurs, during the closure period any through traffic will be stopped by a member of the team at the intersections of Moki Road and Heao Road, so they can turn around before they reach the road closure. Residents will be permitted up to the road closure points at all times.

Work will stop at noon Thursday 28 March and the road will be opened for the Easter break.
