The Month Ahead

The team delivering SH1 and Tarewa Road Intersection Improvements have a few milestones in their line of sight at the moment. The first will be the completion of the service installations and undergrounding of the power supply. This will be closely followed by a major shift of traffic and the start of the pavement works north of Matipo Place.

Work to prepare the new pavement on SH1 has been underway in Tarewa Park since March this year. This will soon move to the SH1 and Matipo Place intersection and, following that, between Matipo Place and Maunu Road. Preparing the Matipo Place intersection first will allow us to move traffic from the old Otaika Bridge, which will soon be demolished and rebuilt, to the new section of bridge.

Read on to find out more about what we've done, what's coming up, traffic impacts and what the area will look like once complete.

What did we do in May and June?

• Continued preparation work for the new SH1 northbound lanes through Tarewa Park. In some places  this has involves a process called undercutting which sees us strengthen ‘soft spots’ underneath the new road base.

• Continued to relocate the existing services into ‘service trenches’ along the western and south-eastern sides of Otaika Road and on Tarewa Road.

• Specialist teams continued to connect and liven the renewed services in the new service trench and to private properties.

• Continued to build the new retaining walls and acoustic fences on private properties. These will help to support SH1 when it’s widened to two lanes in each direction and will minimise road noise for residents.

• Began to  install the new storm water main in Tarewa Park. The main pipe is 800mm in diameter and will help to ensure our waterways are kept clean

What will we do in July and August?

• Work will begin to prepare the new northbound lanes at the SH1 and Matipo Place intersection.

• Once the preparation at the SH1 and Matipo Place intersection is complete, we will move traffic onto the new Otaika Bridge and closer to the east side of SH1 to allow pavement preparation to begin north of Matipo Place.

• We will remove the existing road surface, kerbs, footpath and driveway entries along the western side of Otaika Road. We will maintain vehicle access for residents during this time, with some restrictions.

• Preparations to demolish the old Otaika Bridge will begin once we have moved traffic onto the new side of the bridge.
Once complete, the bridge will carry four lanes of traffic with pedestrian access and an underpass.

Upcoming Traffic Changes

We are currently working to prepare the Matipo Place intersection and the new side of the Otaika Bridge to carry traffic. This will ensure we maintain traffic flow when we move to complete the pavement work further north.

The map below shows where traffic will be moved to, once preparation work at the SH1 and Matipo Place is complete. Both north and southbound vehicles will be moved further east, creating enough room for the work area.

Please know that we will maintain 50kmph and 3m lane widths throughout the work, but please take extra care and slow down when driving through the site.
