Graduate Student Health & Dental Plan – What You Need to Know
All full-time graduate students at Carleton are automatically enrolled in the GreenShield Student Health & Dental Plan through the Graduate Students' Association (GSA). The plan provides comprehensive coverage to support your health and well-being during your studies. Check out the GSA Student Services page here for more detailed information about the plan.
Part-time students are not automatically covered, but may elect to join the plan. Part-time co-op students are subject to the same rules as part-time students. If your part-time co-op is in the Fall Term, you will need to opt-in to the health plan within the applicable opt-in period while you are eligible. Here is the opt in link!
The opt-in and opt out period is firmly set at Oct. 10. No exceptions can be made after this deadline.
Students can contact gsacarleton@studenthealth.ca with health plan questions but may also look at the FAQ section.
The Carleton University Therapy Dog Program is our in-house Therapy Dog Program, designed to bring positive (or as we say, paws-itive) mental health and wellness supports to our community.
All of our dogs are handled by professional staff and faculty members at Carleton, and their Handlers work to create welcoming and supportive environments that can provide low intensity, yet effective coping strategies for mental health and wellness.
Pathy Foundation Fellowship: Applications Now OpenApplications for the next cohort of the Pathy Foundation Fellowship is open until Nov. 15. This is a 12-month experiential-learning program in youth leadership and community engagement. Each year, up to 12 selected Fellows receive state-of-the-art training, extensive support, and $50,000 in funding to support their growth as leaders, make a meaningful impact in a community they care about, and acquire skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. This is the only program in Canada that provides young people with a fully funded opportunity to dedicate a year of their early career to an initiative they are passionate about, in any field, sector, and community across the world. |

Master of Architecture student Olive Lazarus has won the 2025 Canada Green Building Council Scholarship for Sustainable Design and Research for his master’s thesis, which includes a deep analysis of straw as a building material.
The RAIC Foundation awarded the $5,000 scholarship for the thesis titled Biography of a Bale: Local Material Narrative as Architectural Practice. Lazarus’s thesis advisor is Assistant Professor Jerry Hacker.
“I hope this thesis can contribute fruitfully to the body of design literature which advocates for the use of bio-regional materials in the built environment as well as that which advances a narrative-centered framework for understanding ecological conditions,” says Lazarus.
“Ultimately, I want this research to provide a stepping stone for architects and design students interested in working towards ecologically resilient futures by fostering a deepened familiarity with the material-production systems they rely on.”
