Team undertaking work on Rosedale Road.

Making the most of Alert Level 3

We recently carried out an extended weekend closure of Rosedale Road between Tawa Drive and Triton Drive so that we could remove the old Rosedale Road bridge abutments.

Work was originally planned to take place over multiple weekend closures later in the year but to make the most of the lower traffic volumes during alert level 3 and help reduce the impact to the travelling public, we brought this work forward. Being able to have our teams working in ‘bubbles’ with both day and night shift rotations meant this task was completed in just over four days.

The new bridge we’ve built increases the span width across Rosedale Road, future proofing it for increased traffic capacity including buses feeding into the planned Rosedale Bus Station as well as a wider shared path for those travelling on foot or by bike.

Work in this area – both the deconstruction of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge - is being carried out in stages and our most recent closure here follows on from January 2019 when we lowered Rosedale Road in this section by 1.5m during a two-week closure.  This was to increase the overhead clearance capacity and bring it up to current roading standards.

Work will continue to replace the Rosedale Road SH1 motorway bridge over the coming months.

Completion of the SH18 noise walls

As part of the upgrades to State Highway 18/Upper Harbour Highway, 662 metres of noise walls are being installed, separating the new shared path and motorway onramp from neighbouring properties.

A retaining wall crew has been undertaking this work in stages when sufficient construction space became available.  We’ve been able to complete this task now there is more workspace in the area following the SH18 traffic switch a few months back when we shifted the traffic lanes further north.

In total, the noise wall is made up of 223 panels with the largest measuring an impressive 6 metres in length, 2.5 metres wide and weighs 6.5 tonne. Ensuring the panels are secure and held in place required steel piles to be driven 6.5 metres into the ground.

Underpass continues to make progress

Check out these latest photos from the underpass which will be the direct motorway to motorway connection for people travelling from the north on SH1 and heading west on SH18.

Phase one of the ‘big dig’ has now been completed with approximately 6,500m³ of material excavated - that’s enough material to fill 2.5 Olympic sized swimming pools.  With the team now able to work in the median of the motorway, construction of the middle section which will become the roof of the underpass (as well as the road surface for vehicles travelling on SH1 above) continues and in a couple of weeks, phase two of the ‘big dig’ will also start.

Last of the Super-Tee beams installed

During an overnight closure this month, we were able to install the last of our 281 Super-Tee beams.

The ‘super’ part of their name comes from their strength as these beams are loaded with stressed steel cables which add reinforcement, allowing them to span further than normal beams - the ones on this project are on average 35 metres long and weigh up to 65 tonnes.
