Road cones removed this Friday

Story
Story

Speed limit increasing between Harris Road and Moonshine Road this Friday 13 December (5.00am).

NZTA wishes to advise residents and road users of an important change to speed on SH58 in the section between Harris Road and Moonshine Road, following the removal of the traffic management this week and the opening of the passing lane.

The temporary traffic management will be removed early in the morning of Friday 13 December. This will mean the current 50km/h speed limit will increase to 80km/h between Harris Road and Moonshine Road.

Its particularly important for residents, business owners and their employees, and those who frequently use this section of the highway, to be aware of this change as they’ll have become used to traffic passing their driveways at 50 km/h.

Now with the temporary traffic to be completely removed on Friday, the speed limit will revert to 80 km/h. Police have been notified of the change.

The completion of the Harris to Moonshine Road section marks a milestone for the SH58 Safety Improvement Project. We thank the residents, business owners, stakeholders, and community, for their patience as we’ve completed this work.

To offer a little background, the delays in removing the road cones and traffic management mainly relate to our safety auditing process and damage that occurred following the flood event in winter.

The reason why the road cones remained on the passing lane is because of necessary safety work that needed to be fully completed.  An important part of such projects is the requirement to have an independent road safety audit completed.

These audits are a critical safety requirement for all projects and something NZTA undertakes to assess any potential safety concerns that need attention before a project is closed off.

These audits are completed by independent road safety specialists outside of NZTA, and the process is rigorous.  Auditors always highlight some aspects that need specialist attention, and these need to be addressed before a new road is ‘signed off’.

We were not able to remove the cones and the temporary traffic speed limit until the audit’s action items were completed. Those tasks included road signage, chip sealing, and other tasks associated with winter’s flood damage.

Regarding the wider SH58 Safety Improvement Project - timing for the final stage between Moonshine Road and the Pāuatahanui Interchange on Transmission Gully is still to be confirmed. We'll update residents, communities, and road users on the project at the soonest possible opportunity.
