Parents newsletter - August 2024

 

As the fall term rapidly approaches, Carleton is here to assist your student with academics, career advancement and wellness. The next few weeks may feel busy as students finish the summer term and prepare for the new academic year.

There will be many opportunities for your student to meet new people and contribute to the Carleton community this year. Encourage your student to regularly visit the Current Students website and follow us on X, Threads and Instagram at @MyCarletonU for student news, events, services and key dates!

 

Important Dates and Deadlines

Saturday, August 17 to Friday, August 23, 2024: Final examinations in full summer and late summer courses will be held.

Sunday, August 25, 2024: Fall payment deadline.

Monday, September 2, 2024: Statutory holiday. University closed.

Wednesday, September 4, 2024: Fall term begins.

Exam Schedule Now Available

The late and full summer exam schedule is now available. Your student can find their schedule on the Scheduling and Examinations Services website or through their Carleton360 account.

The final exam period takes place from Saturday, August 17 through Friday, August 23, 2024.

 

Have a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) and Need to Prove Your Student Attends Carleton?

Students who require Verification of Student Status to obtain their RESP funding can make their request electronically in Carleton Central (log in through Carleton360 on the Current Students website). Completed requests are emailed directly to your student’s Carleton email account within two business days of request.

 

Fall 2024 U-Pass

The U-Pass is a discount transit pass for eligible Carleton students, offering unlimited travel on OC Transpo and STO buses and trains for those enrolled in 1.5 credits or more in the fall and winter terms.

Starting fall 2024, your student’s Carleton University Campus Card and U-Pass will merge into a single card. For them to use the transit system this fall, they will need to add their U-Pass to their Campus Card.

They will receive an email to their cMail account when they are eligible to visit the Campus Card Office to add their U-Pass to their Campus Card. Visit the U-Pass website for more details.

Is Your Student Eligible for the Co-op Program?

Is your student interested in gaining paid professional work experience in 2025? If they are in a program that offers co-op and are heading into second or third year, they can apply via mySuccess (log in through Carleton360 on the Current Students website) by Saturday, August 31, 2024 to see if they qualify.

Students Share Their Virtual International Internship Experiences

Applications for fall 2024 virtual international internships close on Friday, September 13, 2024. These internships offer your student a chance to gain degree-related work experience, develop international connections and earn academic credit, all while being remote. Read stories from past participants on the Current Students website.

 

Centre for Student Academic Support Student Open House

Your student is invited to the Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) Student Open House. Join the team on Wednesday, September 11 or Thursday, September 12, 2024 to learn about the services CSAS offers, such as new How to… from 10 to 2 drop-in sessions, the Incentive Program, one-on-one learning and writing sessions, Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) and more!

Academic Prep: How to Be a University Student

Academic Prep: How to Be a University Student is a non-credit, one-week summer course for incoming Carleton students. Students who take this course get a head start on university success by learning evidence-based academic skills and habits.

The program teaches and guides students through a blend of lectures and readings, plus hands-on workshops. Topics include:

  • Student mental health
  • Notetaking
  • Time management
  • Problem solving

Participants also gain access to optional group sessions and academic coaching throughout the year.

First Year Connections

First Year Connections is a peer-to-peer mentorship program offered by the Student Experience Office. New and first-year students will be paired with an upper-year student in a similar academic program who can support their transition to Carleton.

Each week in September and October, participating students will connect with their mentor to talk about classes, support services, campus life, study skills and more.

Fall Orientation

Registration for Fall Orientation is now open! Fall Orientation provides incoming first-year students with a week of fun activities, a chance to meet fellow students and an opportunity to gain the skills necessary to transition to university life at Carleton.

Returning undergraduate students can meet new people and access a great lineup of events with the upper year event package.
