Flood water modelling

Our flood modelling has been completed and it shows that in a 100-year storm event, along with the effects of climate change, a super high tide and heavy rain, the new bridge may cause a localised increase in maximum flood depths immediately up stream of the project.  (This is a localised increase and will not affect the Kaeo township.)

Existing flood depths in the affected location are already significant and the potential increase is considered minor. We have been talking with potentially affected landowners up stream about the flood modelling and what this may mean for their properties.

Geotech investigations

If you were on the Kaeo Bridge recently you may have seen people in orange operating machinery at various sites around the bridge. These people are part of the project team and they were carrying out geotechnical investigations.

This involved drilling down to identify where the layer of bedrock was so that the bridge piles will sit on hard ground.  The bedrock was much deeper than we had anticipated.  The piles at the northern end of the bridge will sit at approximately 30m deep and the piles at the southern end of the bridge will sit approximately 18m deep.

While carrying out this work, the project team found a non-active geological fault running through the project site.  This is interesting to know but it does not affect the project.
